trisch
I apologise if this topic has been covered already My 100 gallon rain water butt is now empty as it has not rained here for nearly a month and none due for at least another week. I assume its ok to use de-ionised water to water my trays and trays of sundews. Are all de-ionised water the same ? Anything else suitable to use ? Blocky71
De-ionised or reverse osmosis water is your safest bet. I'm in the same boat, just looking at ro units now on eBay........

trisch
OK thanks, is de-ionised and distilled water the same thing.
Ordovic
More or less. The process is different so it has a different name but de-ionised water should be pure H20 (near as damn it).
Hannahraptor
Hi all. I've ordered bulk quantities of deionised water however, I'm wondering if it's ok to get water from a local lake or canal? Thanks
gardenofeden
Depends on the ph and conductivity....
billynomates666
Generally no, there will be too many nutrients in the water for prolonged watering of plants, the only way to know for sure is as Stephen suggests to test it, but I would be very surprised if it is found to be useful. cheers Steve
Hannahraptor
Thanks guys. I've managed to scrounge some rain water from a neighbours butt! :) Deionised should arrive tomorrow.
Ares
Thanks guys. I've managed to scrounge some rain water from a neighbours butt! :) Deionised should arrive tomorrow. How much are you paying per liter if I may ask?

I'd say canal water is a no-no anywhere (it's green swamp water). I've never had any problems with water from a local stream in times of drought. Flytyer
Hi. 12.99 per 25litres from eBay. http://bit.ly/12JWFYp At that price, my newly bought RO filter has paid for itself already! If you have an outside tap, I strongly suggest you invest in one....
3Star
I've just paid four quid for twenty five litres of RO water from my local aquatic shop.

If you have an outside tap, I strongly suggest you invest in one.... That sounds like a good idea. To be honest I've never needed to buy in water before. Thanks for the suggestion. Can I ask where you purchased your RO filter from please? Edited July 18, 2013 by Multimammat
Hannahraptor
I've found this filter on eBay and, as I've never used one before, would value your opinion on it's suitability please? Apologies for high jacking the thread but I'm not keen to waste more money on buying water. http://bit.ly/195IfWw
mantrid
Multimammat, I see you live in Derbyshire. Have you researched or tested your tap water. I suspect your water is from reservoirs in the hills and so maybe very close to where the rain fell in the first place so could be quite low in minerals and nasties. Generally the tap water thats bad for CPs is in areas where it is taken from ground water where it has been picking up minerals and crap from the rocks. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm only just in Derbyshire on the notts border away from the hills, so I suspect the water is from ground water. It's worth testing but I'm pretty sure it's not suitable. Thanks
gardenofeden
If your kettle furs up then your water will not be suitable.
