Greg Allan
Has anyone used a reptile heat mat? I bought one at the weekend for my new tropical sundew setup but my better half, in typical fashion, appears to have gone on one of her tidying up rampages and thrown the instructions away. I want the terrarium to go on the floor. Are there any precautions that should be taken to stop the heat mat setting fire to the house? Cheers,
Jimmie Hansen
The mat wont get warmer then 35C unless its broken. A simple solution is to put some aluminium foil under the mat maybe. As Aluminium foil dont lead heat very good.
ada
i've got a heat mat on for the kids geckos.its on a wood shelf & on 24/7 and hasn't done any harm.if your not sure just stand the tank on small supports i.e corners/middle/centre so air can flow round it. kakozord
I have a heat mat for my Gecko on a wooden table. I don't think it would set fire to anything as they don't get that hot but I always wrap them in bubble wrap to be sure. This just softens the heat a little. Guest Sheila
I've used lots of heat mats. I've never yet known one to overheat, they either work properly or not at all. It should be quite safe on the floor, I can't see it would be any worse than being under a tank on a wooden shelf which is how most of them are set up. Pingman
I use the reptile cable instead of the mat. I have not had any issues with in side the tank. It doesn't get that hot to cause any problems. Peter.
sarraceniashawn
I keep my heater on the side of the tank near the bottom. It seems to work well. I have my tank on the floor which is carpet and I had the same concern. Shawn
aspie.pickerr
I've used heat mats in the past, I used smaller tanks (housing spiders) with feet, on shelving system next to each other with only half of the mat under each tank. You can get controller stats with a temperature sensor probe connected.
