U. asplundii in flower

Hi all,

in the moment one of my U. asplundii forms is in flower, i´m growing also another form of it (thanks Alexander ).

All in all this species seems to be very variable.

Here are some pictures of other forms from other growers:

my flowers have been similar to these

Very nice flowers, but all of them are relatively different.

The last 2 years my flower was very similar to the third link, but both times i have had only one flower stalk.

This year there are 5 and in my eyes 4 of them are looking totally different.

They have 2 lobes more than the "normal" flower.

This is the reason why i wanted to show a lot of pictures from several views.

Here is the plant itself, it´s growing in a 7 cm pot.

But now there are also flowers that are looking this way, till now all the flowers from the same flower stalk are relatively identical, so there is a chance that it´s stable , or is it only something like a "mutation".

I hope you like them.

Bye the way, has anybody observed similar or totally different flowers till now?

I would be happy to see more forms of this species, so, if anybody has observed "strange" flowers, feel free to post them here.

Thanks for the pictures.Very interresting! For me the Flower looks like a mutation.Please let us know if the flower is stable and/or if it´s only one flower stalk that shows flowers like that.For the moment i´m not sure if i like it or not but i will let you know. May be i have still this plant in cultivation? I´ll let you know also.

Here is another Flower.This plant has very high quota of red colour in the leafs and also in the bulb but sorry not in the flower.

Thanks to all of you ,

Jim, till now i have no babies, for the moment my plants are my babies.

But fore sure i will take much more pictures when i´ve a baby myself.

Alexander, till now the flowers seem to be relatively stable. From 3 of the 5 flower stalks the second flower is also looking this way, on flower stalk is producing "intermediate" flowers with shorter lobes, and one is producing my "normal" flowers.

The "normal" flowers are about 1,6 cm in diameter, the strange flowers with the additional lobes are about 3,8 cm in diameter, much more than 2 times bigger.

But of course i´ll check the following flowers as well.

About my growing conditions, the plant is growing in a 7cm square pot, substrate is dead sphagnum with a small part of bark. It is growing in my highland terrarium together with my Heliamphora, Nepenthes, other epiphytic Utricularia and epiphytic orchids. It´s standing in one of the corners because of space problems.

In the moment it has about 35 leafes, till last year i´ve had only about 10 leafes in this pot.

I do not water my plants directely, at night a fogger is working all the time to drop the temperature because i´m using air from outside (there is a hole in the wall with a small fan:smile: ). Because of this method my night temperatures are in the moment about 10-12 degree, daytime about 24-27, but in summer they are higher.

I use 4x36 T8 tubes (the old ones) for my terrarium.

But you are right, it may be a mutation, we have to wait for the next flowers. But i found it very interesting that the flowers have two lobes more at the sides, it´s a totally different flower structure.

It will be interesting to see what flowers will be produced by the devision i´ve send you, but fore sure it will take some time untill it will flower. I hope it´s growing fine.

Interesting form you have there with this red colouration, looks really good. What a pity that the flower is not more colourful or even more reddish, but it´s also very nice and different.

Really a lot of forms for an epiphytic Utricularia.

Here i have 2 other pictures, the first shows a flower, where the 2 additional lobes are splitted (till now it´s the first flower that is looking this way ). The other picture shows the difference in the size between the "normal" and the "strange" flowers.

Yes, the additional lobes are a little bit looking like wings, but it´s also looking a little bit like a Paphiopedilum flower.
