  1. ok folks my sphag arrived today - jsut to make sure I got this right, lay an inch thick in a try plenty of water and full sun / dappled / shaded???
  2. Hey folks, I think I might be getting back into CP's, currently trying to save my rather poorly Miranda which has not done too well for a couple years now. I would like to get hold of some live sphagnum. would appreciate and offers if not does this stuff on ebay look likely to be genuine? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item19cd46b583 thanks, Olly.
  3. JustLikeAPill please be carefull with MH lamps as Sockhom says they get VERY hot and it is not unknown for ignitors to fry. Also make sure any fittings and cables are suitably heat / voltage rated and give them lots of ventilation. I personally wouldn't use them in a domestic environment but that's my opinion.
  4. That's what I call - 'Team Work' Great photo. I too want to see the Wren though
  5. Thanks Julian, I have never bothered feeding so will look into that.
  6. Oh well, at least I know my plant is fairly happy! I just wish the pitchers would hurry up now!
  7. I couldn't believe my eyes when I went to water my Miranda yesterday.... Now how do I tell if I have a boy or a girl? Is there likelyhood of anyone else having the oposite sex plant to mine?
  8. Wow, some real nice plants and piccies you have their!
  9. I don't, but I remember someone else commenting that mine looked very similar to Purp x Minor, and mine looks similar to yours, maybe the lid is a little more wavy though...? Oh and your grub looks like a member of the Lacewing family, Micromus Variegatus according to my Colins guide, but I am sure someone will corect me!
  10. Nice plants you have - the garden centre highbrid looks similar to my S. Purpurea x minor, but I can't be too sure if that's right though! How big is the Nidiformis? and is it true these only last a year or have I missunderstood?
  11. Nice greenhouse Andy. I am interested in the pop bottles - are they configured to maintain a constant level in the water trays by any chance? Also how do other allotment growers react to a CP grower?
  12. Yes that fly looks very detailed, just a bit more light and it would have been even better I think! And for a compact camera too very impressed! The fly is actually a Flesh fly.
  13. That plant is beutiful! It reminds me of those rope climbing frames you get in parks, but a 2d version! I got to get me one of those!
  14. Hi Dunc, I don't actually mind the menu system too much, although it is early days! Why they saw fit to make one of the quick access buttons on the lens barrel for change of resolution / image quality though is beyond me! That should be in the menus! Nothing more annoying than accidently selecting RAW when you want some spur of the moment succesive shots I would also like to have seen the choice between focus or/and aperture lock much easier to select as well! I must say though for all the slagging this camera has recieved I have realised it is mostly down to lazy photographers who can't be bothered reading the manual and 'messing'. When in c1 or c2 it really isn't that slow and shutter lag is not really that much of a problem, unless you want to snap a formula one car on the finishing line! @Mr. Almond I either maintain in scene 9 (macro) or if I want centre weighted etc. which I think might be my favorite meter mode I first goto scene 9, then to custom program and mess from there. By first going to the factory macro mode I assume the camera sets up the macro sweetspot with the lens. I haven't really deviated from this focal length. Is it worth trying? Oh, and in C2 I use continuous focus, quicker by miles and reduces shutter lag aswell. I have used manual focus too but not with any of the shots here - I got a hover fly doing what it does best the other day but unfortunatly slightly blurred, lack of light and camera shake didn't help! The viewfinder is pretty damn good so you can generally see when things are highlighted - this was the main thing that swung the 8700 over the 5700 for me! Thanks to everyone else for the comments they are appreciated!
  15. I have played around with 'cobra' now and it is 1024x768 so can be reduced to 800x600 or whatever the desktop is. Let me know if you think it looks better or worse! http://www.cpukforum.co.uk/uploader/user_uploads/Cobra2.JPG
  16. I can do that Fernando, the original had a bit more window frame to the left which would have to be left to maintain the desktop ratio. I am amazed at how many people like this shot because this was my least favorite! I can't really put my finger on it but maybe I find it a little too harsh and over saturated? I may venture into RAW territory [ ] and mess with colour balance etc...? I do know this is one shot the camera saw differently to what I saw!
  17. Thankyou all for the positive comments - I have to give credit to the camera though it really is superb! I have yet to master the setup and taking piccies of my quick footed 2 year old - this I need because it was the main justification used to buy the thing to my girlfriend, nothing to do with macro photography and my cp's, honest gov I will get round to some more pics in the next few days, I think my head needs a rest from that damn manual, and i am paranoid I might wear the camera out already
  18. @ François thanks - it is still a young plant, and only really taken off this year with some nice pitchers.... I must try to remember who I got it off....? @ lil_flytrap_kid good guess, That pot was supposed to be Nidiformis & Intermedia (I think the bigger plants), but I am not entirly sure what I have... Best ask Joel cos that's where they came from!
  19. Well I finally got my Nikon Coolpix 8700 on Wednesday I won it on ebay about 3 weeks ago and started to worry the guy was taking the mick! I haven't slept for three days (plus the three weeks) now trying to figure out how this thing works but am already being rewarded with the potential of great pics, but got to say this camera is a real dog to use Hopefully a bit of practice and I will get my confidence! any critisism is mroe than welcome please My first Sara flower :? 8) This one has me gobsmacked! I was snapping a small gal wasp or similar when I noticed this Blow fly on the other side of the double glazed window - I expected to get nothing more than a fuzzy blob but I was pleasently suprised Got to say thanks to Aiden (and others with a coolpix) for producing some super piccies which helped in my final choice! Thanks for looking!
  20. there one or two 'official' sites that either tell you directly or give you a clue, nothing secret about them but I would probably be scorned for mentioning anything
  21. some great shots of some stunning plants - some of the best examples I have seen! I think I am wanting something other than VFT 'B&Q' now
  22. For you or the frog :? pretty cool though - considering you always here 'don't do it the traps will rot' blah blah. I guess the plant generally need optimum conditions though?
