FredG
A photo of the fruiting bodies of a fungus that's in quite few of my pots. The 'mushrooms' appear around this time annually. Any ideas? Is it beneficial?
billynomates666
Hi Fred Bear in mind I am no expert and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it could be Rhizopus stolonifer, black bread fungus although it looks to be longer than it should, but that could be the magnification. Good for the carbon cycle decomposing soil, manure etc but it is also the stuff that rots soft fruit. if you are healthy is doesn't do any harm as far as I know. FredG
I wasn't planning on eating any Steve . The fruiting bodies appear to be the wrong shape for Rhizopus stolonifer though. Thanks for trying. I've had the plant (I know it's not a plant but it's easier to refer to it as one) in the pots for years and it doesn't appear to have had any bad effects on any of its co-inhabitants. What ever it is it's probably fixing nitrogen.
