Some Dionaea and some...dodgy...Dionaea :-p

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I wanted to share with the community some of the bits I am working on and getting in to and some of the future bits I intend to mess about with to grow some Dionaea. Now as you have probably noticed in the title of this piece here I have some Dionaea that I am sure (kinda sure) about, and some seeds I just got off ebay which im not so sure about (pretty sceptical about in-fact) :-p

To start out lets have a ganders at the more...reputable cultivar that I have received as a cutting :-p This below is my 'Dionaea Muscipula Fuzed Tooth' VFL cutting that has been potted now in its cylindrical colander for about 10 days :-)

When I received this cutting it was still sitting in its cloning gel and looked lovely and lush green, as the gel has wore off and as the plant places energy in to the growth in to its roots, a few of the leaves have died off there. This is pretty common with other plants as well so im not to worried about it atm, specially as you can see in these photos that these three new shoots have started and are coming out nicely, as well as one of the teeth there has begun to fuse together.

With this next specimen the water mirks up a little (below), I am told its known as 'Goldie', though im not sure if this is a recognized cultivar name for it (doubt it being honest) while this one also came as a year or two year old potted plant.

When it arrived a week or so ago it didn't have a flower growing on it and though I know that I can consider chopping off the flower for additional leaf growth, I am leaving it on here on this one to check out the blooming phase.

Now I know what you're about to say on this next one "lol ebay seeds and their magical lies!" right? but hear me out :-p

First I bought some 'Standard Giant Venus Fly Trap' seeds, I mean them things are everywhere right so the odds seemed pretty decent they were real...well being honest out of the bag of say 20 seeds I got one up and living and going straight with ya.... im not sure that this looks like a baby Dionaea either  :-p

Which leads me to the last and proper rabbit hole ride....

So I didn't learn off these seeds and saw this...

Come on and clean those tears away :-p but it left me with a question, why such a sweet feedback? look at all those sold and 99.9% positive feedback? weird that... so I sent him an email and I was assured they are 'indeed' so...I have to grow them! and see what they ar...n't....

gotta_be_indeed.jpg

and here are them seeds germinating under a light and plastic cover

which just leaves the reveal which I will post on here at some point when I see some movement...or lack of it...:-p

Which leads me to my last couple of pics for the setup for my little growing station :-) im still working on it adding fans and a few bits but its nearly done, have a look below im using a 600w grow/flower bulb on a 400w ballast so it is equivalent to a single halogen heater bar on a halogen heater :-)

http://www.batzorprogramming.com/My_Collection/96.jpg | http://www.batzorprogramming.com/My_Collection/97.jpg

This is made from an old wardrobe, about 5 pc tower fans running off a single 12v power supply, a 600w grow light, 400/600 switch ballast for the light and plenty of holes drilled in to the thing using a standard drill and core drill piece :-D

Which leaves me to thank you for having a read and a look in to what im getting up to and to leave a comment as to place your bets on the dodgy Dionaea :-p from this you can tell im sceptic but im still game :-)

Unfortunately your seedling is not a VFT

thought so :-( I was expecting a super small fist to start sticking up there, but the leaves really are a tell tale sign of...liesss :-) thanks for confirming, im intrigued what they have palmed me off with :-)

Random question, I've never sown dionea seed without first at stratifying it first for at least 8 weeks, could this be the problem? If they were fresh seed this year or even if they were harvested and stored, they probably haven't been stratified.

thanks for the point to consider :-) I have not come across stratification before, indeed I find it weird how the clustering of the seeds helps them all prosper :-D I mean...how do they know they are next to others! :-p

I will try to stratify my first batch of dionaea seeds when I get some :-) so far I have been working from cuttings and have done a few other plants from seed but Dionaea is new territory :-) and great fun territory at that...though I noticed my fuzed tooth has snot coming out of its roots which I cant see being to much of a good thing :-p

hmm I think though even if they were un-stratisfied say, then they shouldn't come out with the side by side leaves, from the looks of the dionaea pictures of seeds so far I have seen, I have not seen dual leaves pop out, just a green fist, Seymour type thing :-D

have you ever seen dionaea that have come out with the dual leaves rather than the fist may I ask please? you look a real vet :-p

I'll post some pictures tomorrow of some of my seedlings, but you can easily check some videos of dionea seedlings and see what their seedling leaves look like prior to the mini traps they produce. The second leaf has always been a trap for me.

EDIT:

This is not mine, but a good pic of a dionea's first leaves:

thank you for linking me this image, I have just had another look on y.t. and over google and im afraid I must admit I don't think that my egg box seedling is a V.F.T., its just because as below and on the other vids the dionaea seem to have one leaf that shoots up that splits, where this one seems to have grown a stalk and then deployed leaves from the top of the stalk. I will keep growing it though to see what it comes out like :-) atm im giving focusing on my fuzed tooth with its snot coming out of its roots. its supposed to be bad bacteria so I have give it a neem oil treatment and am going to give it a trichoderma cocktail over the week to see if I can help it out :-) I didn't want to test neem on the fuzed tooth as I haven't seen the results of neem oil on dionaea yet, though read it works on the other c.p. :-D I like how in this picture you have provided they have squashed the pitch to make a bed for the seeds to lie on, I was going to go for water germination between the old cotton wool pads but I might have a go at this one to :-)

totally appreciate your input btw :-)

I use milled sphagnum, and some live sphagnum around it, but live sphagnum grows much faster than the germinated plants, so they can get overwhelmed quickly. These seedlings are now a couple of months old. I tend to cut back the live sphagnum, I really only left it in there to help raise circulation of water, but it isn't necessary, just merely an experiment on my part.

The second picture shows a transplanted seedling (very easy to do if the milled sphagnum is very thin in a small container, you just scoop the entire thing out without disturbing roots. The green on the second picture around the seedlings is algae growth buildup in the milled sphagnum

thank you for the share, they look very healthy :-) the experiment with the live sphagnum was an interesting move, just having a read there it makes good sense, for the additional water capacity say and that it creates acidity which helps stave off to many germs. im very interested in using the stuff to help with the antibio side of things all round but im also wondering if a neem option is a long term solution as well, say give then a neem treating every few months, I have heard that done with other c.p.

from the look of this fuzed tooth, I would say that neem the other day I gave it has done wonders, the leaves are coming out nice and opening now and the flower at the centre is making some headway as well :-) looks a lot healthier and happier all round and the snot from the roots has completely disappeared. that bottle of trichoderma I ordered the other day should be here soon, I wanted to try some of that and if it doesnt work in the long run and the snot came back I would leave off the trichoderma and just go back to using neem to cleanse the soil completely :-)

I always figure good bacteria defeating bad is better than a cleansing but gonna roll with it and test and mess along the way :-)

you do have a sweet setup here though so im really tempted to get some sphagnum in to see what effects it has on the different cultivars :-)
