Joining-the-Dots: "Mucks and Grey-Iron-'Tannins"

'Muck'-Soil Information is Few-&-Far Between.

Dark, Black, Amorphous (Without-Perceivable 'Structure' ie Upon-Examination with the Naked-Eye ... Without-the-Aid-or-Use of a Microscope) Highly-Organic Mediums with a 'Stickyness' Akin-to-Gleys. The Fineness and Colloidial-like Nature-of-the-Medium is Probably-Why They act More-like Clays than Humus per se.

Experiment has-Shown that Peat Can be Turned-into-Muck if Attacked by Hydrochloric-acid (Muriatic ie From-the-'Ocean') [Hcl] at Strengths of Rhoughly 60-75% [375g/Litre] So-Called: "Pool-Acid". Slightly Higher-Levels (80-100%) will Take the Medium almost in-&-to a 'Charcoal'-like Stage or State that 'May' Cause-One to Take-a-Backward 'Glance' at The St-John series Soils of Dionaea-Site-Fame.

This 'May'-Seem very "Excessive" though this Degree or 'Level'-of-Acidity is a Natural-Product of Coastal Gley-Soils invaded or 'Inundated' by The-Open-Ocean Either Directly or as Vast Inland-Seas of the Prehistoric Past (Australia ... Largest 'Salt'-Lakes in The-World as remnants of at-least Three-such Invasions). This Acidity is driven by The-unusual-Chemistry of The-Soil in These Coastal-Sites and Their Inundation.

Aluminium-chloride is 'Partly'-Responsible and "Sets"-the-Final-pH though it-is Not-the-Main-"Driver" ... which Apparaently is a New Chemical-Entity or 'Species' that is basically a Half-Buffer-System with Seemingly 'Near'-Infinite-Buffering-Capacity ['Able' to Prevent Sodium-Hydroxide from Dissoluting!!! ie The "Classic" Deliquescent Compound of Inorganic-Chemistry] BUT! in Only One-Direction Only! {ie Tautaulogy: ... Whose only Valid-use is When-"Used" to 'Make'-a-Point >(*U^)<} Powered by the Entropy-Term of The Gibbs-Free-Energy-Equation ie it is the Structure of the Material that Resists-attack by Common-Ion Effect and allows Extreme Acidity to-be Non-Impacted. Basically We're 'Talking' pHs between 2-1! ie Orange to Red via Universal-Indicator this Ties-up Nicely with the Comments of Oosting-&-Oosting [Patricia-R Roberts] of Fifty-Years Ago in the Only-'Known' Ecological-Study on The Venus-Flytrap in-its Natural-Environment; Who Reported Soils in Dionaea ranges of Extreme-Acidity below 2.8 ... but-Were at-a-Lose to offer an Explanation Which 'Seems' Very-Strange in-Hind-Sight for They Presumely were Driving-Back Past-a-Sign Stating that-They-Were Entering the grounds of a "Marine"-University, on a Near-Daily Basis, and-yet neither Had the Presence-of-Mind to 'Test'-for the level of Sodium-in-the Soil or Aluminium in the Soil even-though one of the Co-authors had presumeably published-a-Book on World-Vegetational-Systems Some Ten-Years Earlier and Should-Have-Been Up-on Gley-Podzolic-Soils and Coastal-'Salt'-Marsh Vegetational-Systems!!!?? >(*~*)<.

Most of the Genus-species Associates in Their-Paper are Either Serpentine Endemics or Have a Related species in the Same Genus that is Now-Known to Be-One!!! >(*~*)< Of-Course They Didn't 'Then' Have Access to Robert-Richard-Brookes Book: "Serpentine-&-Its Vegetation" to be able to Make-this Connection ... such is the Vagary of Hindsight!? >(*~*)<

One-plus Grey Iron [Fe+] is Only 'Stable' in Cool Gley Soils of Extreme-Acidity. Temperatures over 60oC (Intense-Soil-Solar-Radiation) can Cause-it to Temporarily Break-Down but-it will Reform When the Soils Cool-again towards-Nightfall so it can be 'Envisaged' as somewhat of a Cyclic-Seasonal-Phenomenon being-Present in Cooler-Climes [Europe etc] or in the Cooler-Seasons of the Year in Hotter-Climes [Australia etc.]. There-is also a Concentration-Aspect to its Maintenance and will cause the production of Tannin-appearing Iron-Compounds Saponified-&-Colloidally-chlordated Fecl3 / Fe2O3 species, Upon-Dilution, that Need More-attention and Clarification in The-Near-Future ie 'Basically' Saponically-Solubulised "Rust" for Want of a More-Precise & 'Better'-Explanation of Materials, Actions & Events.

An-Example of this can-be 'Seen' in Donald-Schnell's Second-Edition on page 56. Ask-Yourself the Question: "Where-is The-Peat to Produce these 'Tannins'"!!!??? The Answer Is: "They, in-This-particular-Situation, are-'Not' Tannins but Iron in a Figurative-Guise!
