Belfast sink bog garden setup advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I've got some Belfast sinks and I'm wishing to make a bog gardens with them, but I believe it was on here I see a set up method using the plug/strainer with a pipe coming off the bottom threaded part running along the bottom of the sink then coming up the back on the outside of the sink stopping at the desired overflow height.

Does anyone remember or know where this thread is please, as I have tried to find it again and failed miserably.

Many thanks,

Lee

I honestly don't know how you want to make it right; it's probably necessary to talk to an engineer or other specialist. Well, at least consult or search the Internet for information about this, because here on the forums, it is unlikely that you will be said something. So, when I was arranging my garden, I asked on the forms how best to do it, what to buy, what tools to buy, and whether they bought garden shears for work. I didn't get any answers about this, so I had to choose the tool myself. In the end, I decided on the service hausandgarten.com where I ordered the tools for the garden, maybe you can use them.

Other plumbing bits will also be necessary.  Perhaps a U bend and some ordinary waste pipe plus a right angle bend.

It might also be possible to find a reducer to go onto the drain thread, then you could use wide bore silicone tubing like this, or similar.

A bit of Googling should help you.

Thanks for your replies guys, but I've already done it she's in and planted now...

Here some photos of the pipe work arrangement, in and doing the leak test and then the final planting...

I'm growing some drosera and pingiculas from seed so they will go in when there grown on.

Do you have anymore pictures of how you attached all the pipework and could you describe how you fitted it as i have a Belfast sink at my front door waiting for a bog garden to be built in it.

Thanks

Hi pirks,

Yes I do will sort them out and post them up for you, I think I have to resize them as last time I had problems putting pictures up on here, I'll do it this week for you.

Ordinary waste pipe fittings, I'm guessing.  Easily available from ebay or any plumbers merchant.

Yes all the fittings come from a plumbers merchants, they will be alot more expensive on ebay! The plug/grated waste is the hardest bit to get I found because of the size of the hole in a Belfast, sink unless your sink has one already of course.

First was ptfe taping on the 1 1/4" threaded connection so I can start gluing the pipe work. I did this bit before the photo was taken, but here I am holding another threaded connection which will be used on another sink.

The bottom was filled with about 3/4" course granite grit (well rised) with a fine mesh gauze over the plug hole! And then covered with a mypex membrane to stop the growing media mixing and blocking up my drainage layer. The bottom two 3rds of growing media is 50/50 moss peat to perlite then I topped up the last 3rd with about 50/50 moss peat to horticultural sand and emptied out a failed pinguicula Vulgaris seed pot on the surface also, now I will leave it to settle and wash through with the rain before planting up.... some decisions to make now.

All planted up now, let hope all goes well and I'll be adding some seed grown Drosera intermedia and either Pingicula grandiflora or vulgaris... either way the other Pingicula with be going in the second sink yet to start.

Great write up and photos.  Thanks.  Should be very helpful to anyone else wanting to do the same sort of thing.

It'll be interesting to see how well it copes with heavy rain.
