Shade loving Carnivorous plants

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am looking for a carnivorous plant for my housemate, the problem is his room is not sun facing, and the plant would be living in shade.

I looked at some of more popular Pitcher plants and flytraps, and so far they all require a lot of sun.

Do you know of any carnivorous plant that would be happy in shade? Don't want to buy a plant just to kill it!

No carnivourus plant can tollerate full shade. If there are some sun or it is possible to get grow light over nephenthes are your best chanse. They are after all found in dense jungle in difference to most CPs which grows in open bogs. I am not an expert in nephenthes, so hope that someone with knowledge about the genus and windowsill cultivation add more targeted recommendations about species.

Mexican Pinguicula will tolerate lower light levels but if he has no sun at all even they might also be better with grow lights.  Likewise some Utricularia.

Didnt Think about pinguicula. That is a possibility.

But utricularia? In my experience there are two types. The easy to grow ones that are from bogs (need a lot of light) and the hard to grow ones from rainforest type Environment (not good for beginners). Besides utricularia in general dont attract many beginners.

It's a shame to have to discourage a potential beginner but I think you'd definitely have a better chance of success if you could add a grow light.  There are some cheaper options these days so you might be able to consider it.  I'm sure he'll appreciate whatever you get him.
