Sarracenia cultivation?

Hi, I was looking for some advice on how to take care of two pitcher plants I recently bought. Do they require direct sunlight, or does this burn the pitchers? Of one of them, the pitchers are starting to die back while the other is doing fine. Do you know why this might be? Someone told me this is natural in late summer- early autumn.

Hi, the one dying back could be be a S. oreophila as this is natural for that plant at this time of year. Otherwise you can't give Sarracenia too much sun - they love full, direct sun all day long. Some Sarracenia (eg leuco, alata) have a second flush of pitchers in the Autumn, so if you have these plants you should be seeing growth starting now.

I would say that some garden centres keep them too dark and too dry. They will recover easily, but if the pitchers have a rather papery feel to them and are a rather dull green, this may be the case. When put in good conditions the pitchers sometimes shrivel and some will go brown- this is not as shocking as it looks as new and strong ones will come up and replace them.

linuxman is correct. Do you know the name of the species or hybrid? Sarracenia need full sun to look their best. They have unusual shaped leaves which is not very effiecient at getting sunlight  so hence they need full sun (6+hours) to produce good looking pitchers.
