Karsty
Hi Folks, So after 10 weeks of waiting for Amblyseius to eat up my small infestation of Brevipalpus, they are still hanging around! Here's an album of photos - https://photos.app.goo.gl/BtQxohWlbWpzZaLD3 First of all, a big shout out to Ali Baba, who I have also found lurking on other forums, who is supremely knowledgeable about this (almost) microscopic monster. It is pretty weird, because this pest exists in this country, but you cannot find anything official about it. It is not even mentioned on the RHS website. So I have just purchased this - Abamectin . Have I done right or wrong? Will it kill the lot of them outright, including eggs or hatchlings? Should I also get some of this - Tetrasan ? It says it will eliminate everything from eggs to nymphs. I also have SB Plant Invigorator, and I am not averse to mixing all these things together and using them at the same time. They spread very slowly, but I have to get rid of them completely. They are simply in my living room in my flat in one corner. I think they came in on a "Nepenthes sanguinea" ('Rebecca Soper??) which probably had its origin in Holland. This is a smoulderingly desperate situation! Edited May 20, 2018 by Karsty
pirks
Could you get rid of the infected plants or are they not easy to come by? You've got me worried, I read they weren't in this country
Karsty
Hi Pirks, It's a group of plants, kind of interlocked, and mainly precious. I don't mind getting rid of the 2 that I just have, they were small and cheap. The rest are more valuable and complicated. There are very few mites there, it's just a matter of EXTERMINATING the ones that are left effectively. The offending corner - https://photos.app.goo.gl/mJPz72hJ9FRnxpsH7 They gravitate to the weakest/softest plant. Right now all I have found on those plants remaining is one mite on one N. mirabilis v. globosa pitcher that was near the infected VFT (in the centre of the photo, right at the back). That plant is the softest/weakest in the entire group. The offending creature... https://photos.app.goo.gl/GqXfRcbNNGXuXWeH2 Edited May 19, 2018 by Karsty
pirks
Just noticed your post asking about them on bcss, I will certainly be on the look out for them now. Hope you manage to wipe the little sods out.

At the moment it is like one of those smouldering underground fires, but I have to finish them off. I've never had them before in 40 years of growing plants. pirks
Try the bcss forum again, there's a new post from iann about the spider mites so you can get shut of the buggers for once and all but could cost a few quid from reading between the lines but will kill the lot of them

I just separated the N. m. v. globosa from the group. It does look a bit unwell, but it always has looked delicate. I have a plan to mix up all my insecticides together and spray to within an inch of its life..... Edited May 20, 2018 by Karsty
pirks
Well that may work but spray them outside as it could be a little toxic for you and wear disposable gloves just in case. Fingers crossed you kill them Edited May 6, 2018 by pirks

This is a smoulderingly desperate situation! Have you tried spraying with water daily? Try getting a powerful hand pump pressure, something like this https://www.amazon.com/orbo-hand-pressure-sprayer-mister/dp/b00xbtq6f0 . Spider mites and other mites can't survive the daily tsunami on them. It's been my experience that getting rid of spider mites from nepenthes is easier than other plants because of the flat leaves. You can also buy a safe miticide, for me a Bayer product seems to work well for carnivorous plants, tho they are more expensive than the usual ones. Good luck and keep updating us on the situation. Karsty
Hi Scuipici, Thanks for the tip - the problem is where they are - in the corner of my living room! Impossible to spray with water jets. Check the photo above. Additionally, Brevipalpus are not like red spider mite, they are very happy in humid areas. Which Bayer miticide do you use? Karsty
Thanks Scuipici, Interesting! I have already ordered the other 2 products. So I'm waiting for the one from USA, and when I get it, I will nuke the first plant and see what happens.

Probably it came with the mites. I sprayed it and everything else in the room for good measure. I have 2 bottles of this miticide at all times, is the most effective I ever used and I used quite a few over the years. I usually spray every 3 days for 2 weeks. I also spray with neem oil in between just for good measure, you can't overdo it with these hungry monsters.

How about this link?.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/zI8CH59El2bcTNqi1 The truth is that I have not found any mites, or eggs, since the last single mite I found on the pitcher of this N. m. v. globosa. So right now I do not know if that was literally the last one, or if some more are slowly multiplying somewhere else. I just wanted to conclusively wipe them out on this one plant, I think I'll wait to see if they show themselves on any of the others that were close to it before I nuke them also. This Brevipalpus is a slow grower and spreader. I've only just sprayed it, this evening! Edited May 20, 2018 by Karsty

Karsty
Yeps, I'll let yous know. I mean, to the naked eye they are literally the tiniest red dot, but It is just about possible for me to distinguish them, then get out my magnifier to confirm it. I have not seen any more since I removed the pitcher on which I found 1. Now it is just a waiting game..... I still don't get why the photos are invisible. Maybe something to do with the new privacy laws?
Karsty
So here is something really ...... Cool? Amazing? Frightening?........ I noticed today a whole little forest of movement in one of my pots, and it was an army of fast moving beige mites. They were on some compost that I had only planted up a week ago. Upon inspection I found more in other pots. I found them first completely on the other side of the room to where I first hung the Amblyseius sachets, and there's hundreds of them! I think they are Amblyseius, but it is surprising, if they are, to find so many of them on the other side of the room where there are no mites for them to feed on. Here's videos - any ideas? https://photos.app.goo.gl/s0EawANqS6L643b23
Karsty
Well, Miracle Gro are saying those mites are probably "fermentation mites", but if they eat yeast, why are they running around everywhere and why are there so many of them? I have literally seen them do nothing except run around. Anyway, there's been a bothersome development - I've just found Brevipalpus on a little Nepenthes x hookeriana in the other corner of the room. It is pretty weird. No sign of them on anything in between. In all they have only appeared on 2 small Nepenthes and one VFT, all from the same source. So I cut back all adjacent foliage and submerged it in boiling water, and will blitz the plants with the triple pesticide this weekend. Here's a video and some photos of them this time - https://photos.app.goo.gl/rMuLJVE5JlbRkXvz1 https://photos.app.goo.gl/2ALMbpM9IVz38Ny83 https://photos.app.goo.gl/v9ETxGjHJb8a8oyE3 https://photos.app.goo.gl/vHu2F1IDXxUc9cMJ2 Here you can see that yellowish shrivelled ill look the mites cause - https://photos.app.goo.gl/XtIMpmuGS2UEUe0P2 Any problems seeing the photos? pirks
No problem with your pics this time, that's the best pics I've seen of the mites. Excellent camera work Can you say where you got the plants from with the mites on? Edited May 25, 2018 by pirks
Karsty
Thanks Pirks This is actually the clearest photo I've managed to get - https://photos.app.goo.gl/IeDgOQRKxtyt7l972 I got the plants from Aylett Nurseries, St Albans, Herts. The thing is the mites only became apparent several weeks after I bought the Nepenthes "sanguinea", so I felt I could not assume they came in with the plant, but maybe they did? This garden centre is without fail the best one for miles around here, it's the best one that I have ever been to. I go there very often. Just checkout the Google reviews. Their supplier for these plants is Floramedia....
