I don't have fb either, although I am finding it excludes me from certain groups such as echinopsis hybrid group that apparently is most active on there.  Still not enough to make me go near fb.

FB is good for quickly posting photos and short comments. But imho forums are better for in-depth discussions and people without ADHD.

And the content of forums is search-able too.

I've been away.  Although I do have a Facebook account, I very rarely go onto it - I tend to use it for saving game progress.  I hate the way that it filters what you see and hate the timeline.  I much prefer forums, and have no intention of abandoning them.

Maybe those people with a FB account should start blasting the FB stuff with comments about how much better these forums are, and how people should be posting here instead! Drive them mad until they come here anyway :jive:

well, i wasn't able to get answers to one of my questions here, so i regrettably joined facebook, posted a few rare drosera and instantly acquired 30 new facebook friends and lots and lots of likes. makes me feel real special. and loved. it also seems like a good way for those of us in the US to sell plants. ill be sure to check back here from time to time though. meanwhile, anyone who wants to be facebook friends, come n find me. :)

Can you provide a link to this? As I said before, whenever I go to FB, I just get a log-in page. I'd like to see what there is there before giving them any details.

That's assuming you can see anything without logging in of course!

Yossu, you do need to log in to Facebook before you can see anything unfortunately

Thought so. Ho hum.

Assuming I decide to join, how would I find the CP bit? never used FB at all (as you can tell!), so no idea.

Thanks for the news, sad though it is.

OK, thanks, I'll contemplate the matter. Might take a look at the international forum, see if that's any more active before I lower myself to join FB!

Theres a lot more activity on facebook, but I agree with the comments that its all fairly superficial.  Good for posting photos and trading stuff but very little depth.

Have you tried Terraforums? Seems to be a bit like this place used to be, only international.

Certainly Facebook, the carnivorous plant groups are very active and you can easily bang on a photo, its a shame though as i dont see it as a substitute for a good forum, i see the CP FB groups as more a post and chat thing, good for mobile browsing but i prefer the the forums, where posts are just not forgotten and left behind. Shame

I've looked at it over the years but never got into it the same way, this was the first one i found back in 2003 (probably before that even) and mostly stuck to here and a few more nepenthes related forums.

The majority of nepenthes growers are on facebook now though, theres also some really interesting other groups im interested in, coelogynes, ferns, pleiones, etc.  The fern forum went offline a few years ago, its all on facebook now.

I have had FB for quite some time but prefer to use forums for discussions and information sharing. FB has it's advantages being a more accessible social format that people check more often but I prefer discussion forums due to the quality of information shared and lack of online drama although there have been a couple exceptions in the past.

If I had to speculate, I would say the exodus isn't due to social networking but moreso due to platforming. Meaning that less people actually use a PC or whatever to access these various portals and instead use their mobile phones which the amount of content in a discussion forum isn't as cell phone friendly. I believe that in order for the discussion forum to survive that more time needs to be put into developing the content for tablets and mobile phones to be comparably convenient as a social networking site whether it be from an end user or the host developing such a format.

I used to be active on Terraforums but the amount of drama allowed to happen kinda drove me away from it. It may be better now, idk. I am generally the most active on sarracenia pro boards which has a great online community. I have been on there a while now and not really had any bad experiences, I think the site got a boost from TF members that were in the same boat as me.

Other than the sarracenia pro board and here I am not very active elsewhere. I like this site because to more me it is more like a window into what goes on outside of the states regarding the hobby as a whole.

Doesn't the site work with TapaTalk? That's for mobile devices.

I tried it on my iPad, and it seemed OK. I don't use the iPad much, and don't have a mobile, so can't say for sure, but I think that mobile access isn't the problem.

I almost exclusively browse the CPUK forum from mobile and confirm it works very well and the design is good.

I think the popularity of Facebook (with regard to CP groups) is that people tend to like things all in one place as their time is precious. Lots of people check Facebook as a matter of course at multiple times a day.. they can check up on friends, family, colleagues, global news, and matters related to the groups and pages they follow, all at the same time via the default news feed. It's a similar reason why lots use the Facebook messenger part as their sole way of messaging and why you can log into other websites with a Facebook login - it's all about simplifying and making things easier which we can all relate to.

All that said though, for those that do not use Facebook that heavily (like me), I find it becomes counterintuitive for good, archivable information on specific topics (such as CP groups). It's maybe OK for a quick question and/or for showing off photos, but I find true scientific and well thought out responses few and far between. As time is precious, and people are merely 'browsing' Facebook, they are less inclined to share and discuss on bigger, more complex topics. It is easy for information to get lost within pages of 'Why is my store bought VFT dead?' There of course is nothing wrong with such questions when starting out, but on a Forum such as this, it is easier to partition topics into relevant categories, archive and sticky important reoccurring topics, and link directly to previously posted information. Facebook's constantly ongoing news-feed style postings are difficult to navigate when looking for specific information over time.

Sorry for the long post, just my take on the two and why I hope the forum continues for a long time in preference over Facebook.

Oh, and one other footnote - there is also the potential issue of misquoted/reshared fake/untrue/unfounded topics on Facebook being taken at face value. Lots of people simply believe everything they read/see and do not even stop to think before liking or reposting what is essentially nonsense! (This is a personal bugbear of mine with regards to Facebook as a whole).

Well I don't think everyone is leaving for somewhere else. I think the reasons are simple. It's winter so not much is going on and people frequent many CP websites. Myself i browse cpuk, terraforums, sarracenia forums,Flytrap forums, savage garden subreddit and few pages on FB. As for forums vs FB, I find FB lacking. Good to spread news to a larger audience but it sucks for useful info or communicating. Forums are very valuable for me.
