Asda Nepenthes

Managed to find a lady luck! I happened to be passing an asda which isn't really local to me and went in for a look, they had loads of nepenthes left and among those was one lady luck. Very happy it's the one I most wanted!

That list only shows you where they have had them at some point. Unless you're interested in looking up the number for every one in your local area, ringing them all up and dealing with the dumbkopf on the other end of the 'phone, it won't tell you if they have them in.

Been there, done that, got fed up!

Worth checking first though incase the shop isn't on the list.

Must admit I have never really liked these plants, not everyone's cup of tea I know and each to their own and all that.

Norn Iron is not in any stretch of the imagination tropical nor temperate (more in frigid zone!) so a real non starter.

for £4 I must admit I have been tempted and was even very surprised that there was a local-ish Norn Iron store in the list. Typically not the closest one but am sending the sister in law to have a mooch tonight and see what is in there. I would imagine that there are plenty as this is not something that is suited to here and is a little to specialised for the daffodil/Shasta Daisy stand!

will report back what is there and what they are like.

as for the re potting bio-dome site has some nice egs in what look like simple glass vases/fish bowls. Plenty of old glass jars in the shed that need a new use!  Could be the start of an interesting project.

fingers crossed

As it happens, when I was in an Asda the other day, I saw some very nice looking glass vases that would be ideal for growing these on. Can't find the one I liked most on their web site, but it looked like this one, but was more spherical, like a goldfish bowl, and was either £4 or £5. I was wondering about trying one as a showpiece for a single nep.

That's funny, I've been scouring charity shops for old glass 'fish bowls' to use as terrariums.

Well, go to your nearest Asda, at least one that sells home stuff, and have a look. They had quite a selection in the one I saw. Quite a reasonable price as well.

Have you had any joy in the hunt Yossu?

As it happens, yes. Vampiresrus got me a Suki, a Bill Bailey and a Lady Luck. I don't know if they have done any others, but I have these three. I put them with my other indoor CPs, so they are (mostly) under some daylight CFLs. Hoping they are going to grow well there.

Excellent news, guess that means they may re-stock in my area too. I may get some more Suki, it seems to like the conditions i'm growing it in on my work windowsill. Averaging 20 degrees and 50% humidity on a north west window and it's out growing of the pot and pitchering nicely.  It's been there exactly a month and seems to be thriving on just tap water.  Result.

calm down chief, I think that this is more of a first time arrival to the westerly regions rather than a restock......

Nevertheless if they are still arriving here and from what I can see in this thread then it seems a popular line so may well be. I am sure there will be folks here updating

Occurred to me over the weekend, are we all getting just a little over-excited here? Whilst I'm with the rest of you (although happy that I managed to get all three), we're jumping up and down at the idea of buying a tweeny Nep for £4. Sure, they are a cute idea, but to be perfectly blunt, it's a tweeny Nep in a plastic box, nothing you couldn't do yourself. Looking around, I see places selling bigger Neps for this sort of price.

Have we been caught by a false bug?

I nearly completely missed these, I'm guessing I walked straight past them a good few times at my local asda (Brighton), I headed there after finding this thread and found five Suki left (right next to one very dead sarra). I'm a bit annoyed I missed the Bill Bailey, but got a nice healthy looking Suki so cheers for the post!

I think Yossu has a point, but the novelty collectability (pokémon effect?) of the biodomes is a winner for me. Where are you finding neps for £4 though?

Plus, they grow like weeds compared to most other Neps I've grown (and killed :( ).  My Windowsill Suki is putting out its second new pitcher and has grown out the top of the dome already in just 4 weeks.

FWIW, of the three varieties I have, Suki is by far the most vigorous, Lady luck the least.
