Fertiliser choice...

Hi everyone,

I've seen some thread about similar topics, but they were rather old.

I currently use osmocote pellets for my Nepenthes. I would like to try liquid formulations, but I'm a bit lost.

If I remember what I've read so far, it's better to avoid urea, as it needs bacteria in the soil to make the nitrogen available for the plants.

My mix is composed of perlite, dead sphagnum, barks, peat (not always) + living sphagnum surfacing.

I "heard" that there are some issues using sphagnum and fertilising. Do you know anything about that?

Do you have any recommendation (brand and product) based on successful use?

Cheers

Vincent

If you can get your hands on some Maxsea 16-16-16 from the US (I got mine on Amazon.com but they withdrew shipping after mine arrived) it is actually good for Sphagnum.

I haven't tried this yet but putting an Osmocote pellet into each newly opened pitcher is supposed to be very good. Don't know how it will effect tiny pitchers though.

Thanks both!

I can't really use mealworms, as I'd like to feed plants with very small pitchers.

It's a shame we can't get Maxsea around.

Anybody else?

Quoting from the first edition of The Savage Garden (pre Maxsea era). Foliar feed twice a month in warmer months, once a month in winter. Can also be through the soil if plants are heavily watered at other times with pure water.  Use a 50% solution of and orchid or epiphytic fertiliser.

Here in Australia, i to have use Growth Tech Orchid Focus Plus bought it from a ebay uk seller last year they say its great due to it urea free. But this year i going to use seasol and powerfeed a Australian product and maybe every second month coffee fertiliser for the up coming growing season. I can either pour it in the soil or foliar feed. As i use coconut husk chip/charcoal for my mix.

I'm using diluted Orchid Focus (Grow) by Growth technology twice a month. My neps seem to like it based on the leaf jumps and overall shape.

Hi Jim,

I have Orchid Focus too. What is your fertilising method and what strength is the solution used?
