Dear all. An update on the ICPS 2016 Conference.

Please note: you do not need to be a member of The CPS or of any other cp society to attend the Conference.

Best wishes

ICPS Conference 2016: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew London

Please note: the ICPS dates originally proposed have now changed.

The Conference will now take place 5th to 7th August (Fri-Sun).

A field trip to Down House, the home of Charles Darwin, is planned for Mon 8th August. There are no restrictions on numbers planned for this trip.

The CPS expects to run a field trip between 10th and 12th of August. Tuesday 9th would be a travel day to the location. The field trip would take place in the New Forest area (Hampshire) and Dorset. The carnivorous plants, which would be seen growing in the wild are:

Drosera rotundifolia
Drosera intermedia

Drosera anglica

Drosera x eloisiana (previously named D. x belezeana)

Drosera x obovata

Utricularia minor
Utricularia australis
Utricularia stygia
Utricularia intermedia
Utricularia bremii

Pinguicula lusitanica

Sarracenia purpurea ssp. purpurea
Sarracenia purpurea ssp. f. heterophylla

The trip will encompass some of the most beautiful countryside within Hampshire and Dorset, with the best cp sites selected from several years of study. Within the time available, we can look to run an excursion to Stonehenge if wanted and/or to a commercial nursery. There will be a restriction on the number of participants given the ecological sensitivity of many of the sites, but we will aim to be as flexible as we can on numbers. For instance, running two groups in reverse.

The scientific lecture programme will span the 3 days of the Conference based around the general theme: The World of Carnivorous Plants. Details will follow, but our expectation is to provide a programme with a similar number of lectures and structure to the recent 2014 Cairns ICPS Conference.

There will also be opportunities for Conference delegates to see cp material kept behind the scenes, such as Kew’s herbarium.

It is likely Kew will run an additional public/scientific engagement carnivorous plant event a few days prior to and during the time of the Conference, e.g. from the Weds. Should this come to fruition then it would a substantial additional benefit to Conference visitors. With a very busy lecture programme, visiting a day or two earlier would give more opportunity to explore all the Kew has to offer and the other cp offerings under discussion.

As is normal we have carnivorous plant displays and a seller’s area planned, within which our expectation is to assemble the greatest number of genera, species, forms and varieties ever presented. Assuming Kew’s extended cp activities happen, we would look to make the sellers and display available for those days too. This may even give us an opportunity to add in some bonus lectures.

For those who like to plan well in advance we are sorry we can’t 100% guarantee Kew’s extra activities, but will endeavor to let you know ASAP.

The customary evening meal is planned for the evening of the 6th August (Sat) at a venue (Italian - up to 120 places) within a very short walk of Kew.

We are in detailed discussions with Kew on many specifics, which we will circulate ASAP as they are confirmed.

It is too early for us to announce specific costs, such as the Conference fee, though we are working hard to keep any necessary charges to the bare minimum.

Summary: Key ICPS 2016 Conference dates

Location: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Duration: 5-7th August 2016

Evening meal: 6th August 2016

Down House Field Trip: 8th August 2016

Very interested in the above, will keep an eye on this post to see how things develop. I'll look at booking time off in advance so I can attend. Sounds fascinating. Has anything this large and comprehensive ever been done before in this manner in the UK?

Hi

the CPS has organised two of the European Carnivorous Plant EEE events in the past but this is the first time that the International Carnivorous Plant Society Conference has been held here in the UK.  We are grateful to the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew for their support and enthusiasm in hosting this prestigious event.

regards

Hi Folks

Save the Date - ICPS 2016!

We are pleased to be able to provide you with an update regarding next year’s ICPS Conference 2016, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on the 5th-7th August 2016.

To coincide with the ICPS Conference hosted at RBG, Kew on the 5th -7thAugust 2016, RBG, Kew is planning to have Carnivorous Plants as a major theme of the Kew Science Festival which will run in conjunction with the Conference. Our understanding is that RBG, Kew are considering extending their festival beyond the ICPS Conference dates with it likely to start a couple of days before. We are not able to confirm anything further on the festival at this time and will send out an update as soon as we hear from RBG, Kew.

For general enquiries about the ICPS Conference please contact us via
http://www.thecps.org.uk/contact.php

CP Sales and Display
As part of the ICPS Conference we intend to provide an extensive cp sellers/display area. This would be open for the duration of the Conference. This will be open to all those attending RBG, Kew over the period of the Conference and potentially the Festival. If you are interested in participating in the cp sales area at the Conference and/or to put on a cp display we are encouraged to contact The Carnivorous Plant Society at the earliest opportunity, Exfressions of interest should be sent to Mitch Raumond at [email protected]

Conference Attendees
For those travelling and staying for the Conference, it would start on 5th and end on the 7th August 2016. Current Kew opening times are:

Monday to Friday: 10am to 6:30 pm
Weekends: 10am to 7:30 pm

An earlier entry time may be agreed for Conference Attendees, in respect to the lecture programme.

As mentioned previously we are planning an opportunity to visit Down House on 8th August, travelling by coach. There is also a potential opportunity to attend a field trip to the New Forest and Dorset on the 10-12th August. These would be an additional cost to the Conference Fee. Priority re available spaces for the Down House trip and the field trip would be given to Conference Attendees.

We are looking at the potential opportunity to hold a lecture on the evening of 4th August for those who arrive early as an added bonus for them.

The Conference fee has not been fully calculated yet and will be advised at the earliest time, what we do not want to happen is for you not to have as much information as you can in order for you to start planning you diaries now.

Non-Conference Attendees

The Conference lecture programme and other Conference benefits would not be available to those not paying the Conference fee.  However, the sales/display area, KSF, public cp lectures, etc., and of course all else RBG, Kew offers would be available as part of the normal Kew ticket pricing. We are working with Kew to provide a pass for the duration of the Conference and proposed KSF.

Conference attendees would be able to enjoy these parts of the Conference fee.

Travel Advice

We know that planning is on everyone’s mind, so if you are looking into this please make sure to check out this: http://www.kew.org/visit-kew-gardens/plan-your-visit/getting-here

Looking forward to this one. I've not been able to get to a CPS meeting for years, so it will be good to catch up with folks, and also to put a few faces to names.

Hi People

just a reminder that time is fast running out to book your place at the ICPS Conference/Kew Science Festival on 5 to 7 August.

Details of the Conference, the Science Festival and associated events can be seen at http://www.thecps.org.uk/page.php?id=16.

The conference has over 30 talks by leading botanists, growers, environmentalists, plant hunters and authors from around the world as speakers giving you the opportunity to hear about the latest research and discoveries.  One talk is on carnivorous seaweeds!

Those attending the conference also get free entry to Kew for the period 4 to 7 August so that they can attend the Science Festival which has a large CP element including plant and book sales, the CPS display, non plant sales, peat free and native CP sections and public CP related talks on a variety of topics by botanists and the CPS.

The field trip to the New forest and Dorset is now full but there are still a few places on the conference dinner on Saturday 5th (you don't have to attend the conference to book a place) and on the Trip to Down House on Monday 8th August.

Bookings can be made at  http://www.thecps.org.uk/conference-booking.php.

Hope to see you there.

Dennis, can you please get someone to correct the ICPS conference page on the CPS website - clicking on "Conference" takes you to the conference dinner page. Not what I was after :negative: . Also, just noticed none of the links work on the Down House visit page.

Thanks,
