Axolotls extinct

Probably not news to most of you but i just heard axolotls are extinct in the wild, totally shocked...

That's a blow. They breed readily in captivity so surely reintroduction is a strong possibility.

That's news to me. I love these little guys, hopefully they will be able to reintroduce them.

Apparently both Lakes where they used to live are not suitable, one has been drained completely and the other is partially drained and whats left is polluted. My niece just came home from doing a masters in zoology with two of the little beasties and thats how I found out.

Theyre such a well known and iconic species, i'm completely speechless that they could have been allowed to go extinct. I know mexico has a few problems but... sign of the times i guess.

Most of the pet axolotls you see contain tiger salamander DNA so are also not suitable for reintroduction. There are some breeding facilites in Mexico that are breeding pure axolotls but where to reintroduce them is clearly a big problem. Here in Australia the axolotl is the only non-native reptile or amphibian you are legally allow to keep.
