SteveH9
Novice question with having a cold greenhouse in winter will I need to empty the nepenthes pitchers in the event they freeze or will they be ok
manders
Letting the plants freeze is a really bad idea, most likely they wont survive with or without water in the pitchers.
SteveH9
Hopefully not going to let them freeze going to hopefully keep the greenhouse 2 or 3 degrees above freezing it will be just in case it does happen .
manders
A heater with a thermostat set to 4C would be a good idea.
SteveH9
So do you think 4C will be ok for ultra highland nepenthes species then
manders
You will have cold spots in the greenhouse (close to the glass etc), 4C is a typical number people use to ensure the bulk of the greenhouse will stay frost free. You might get away setting a lower temperature, but 4C is a good starting point. I have never kept plants that cold all winter so wont comment on whether they will survive or not, but at least they shouldnt freeze. SteveH9
The only other option if weather turns to bad is a SE facing window in the house but I would rather leave them in the greenhouse

Mark Anderson
Just my little bit of input on growing on a se facing window, that's where I grow all of my neps and they thrive, so putting them there will be fine Mark Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
SteveH9
What about the humidity don't they need it to grow pitchers
corky
In the winter without supplement lighting nepenthes find it hard to grow pitchers, we just don't get enough sun in the winter, and yes they prefer high humidity , the heating suggested for your greenhouse is to keep your plants alive without sun they will barely grow Edited July 3, 2015 by corky
SteveH9
So will they enter a sort of dormancy period with lack of sun and heat only , and start to grow again in the summer months
corky
They will slow down, I normally still get leaves produced but no pitchers on the plants I grow in a south easterly window, I don't have a greenhouse so maybe someone else will chime in
Mark Anderson
Mine grow leaves all winter, then in spring it inflates the pitchers that were set in winter, I have mine on south east windows with just natural light. I'll post some pics for you to see how they develop from winter into spring Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
SteveH9
Thanks something to think about I would like to see pic of the nepenthes in winter . Maybe summer in greenhouse winter in SE window.
corky
Sounds like a plan to me Steve , but hopefully someone more experienced will give some input, 4 degrees sounds too low to me, maybe you could keep ultra highlanders alive but I doubt they would grow much with the lack of sun. If you did go for ultra highland plants you would soon come across the maybe larger problem of cooling in the warmer months and if heating in winter is not a viable option the cooling in summer wouldn't be either . Personally I think moving the plants indoors for the very coldest months would be your best bet. But I'm the same as Manders and I have not tried to grow them that cold Edited July 4, 2015 by corky

Nepenthes Lowii
Very nice
Mark Anderson
Thank you, no I never mist them, I was just giving it a spray to give the leaves a clean. I feel it's better to let the plant acclimatise to the conditions it's in rather than spraying indoors.
