Need TC formula suitable for tuberous drosera

Hi Jan,

1/4 MS tends to work very well for most sp. of Drosera. Tuberous sp. might require hormones for tuber proliferation. One thing to note, the seeds of many tuberous sp. are difficult to sterilize.

I have tried putting seeds of common tuberous dews in tc, but all the culture were contaminated. I suspect that they need an extended soak in the disinfecting solution.

I do not think you will need to wait till winter to put the seeds in TC. Maybe a couple days soak in GA3 before sowing in-vitro will help. I have started some D.trinervia(winter growing S.African sp.) in-vitro during the summer from seeds collected in the spring.

Hi and thanks for your answer. Yesterday Stefan posted two pictures in our german forum, he had sown Dr. menziesii in vitro and later put them i a 7er pot. In a specific depth the substrate was gone and everything was a red layer of tubers. And the Dr. stolonifera ssp. stolonifera he sowed in 12/02 are still in vitro and are currently producing their tubers.

Look at the pictures here:

Good growing,

Hi,

I usually desinfect all Drosera seed in a solution of Natrium hypochlorene if that is the correct English term. Formula NaOCL but I have to look for the concentration. Self harvested seed works very good, seed from friends/commercial seed mostly not. The most important thing is to get the seed ripe, but still in the capsules so harvest it one day before the capsules open :-))) but it onto your TV or on another warm place and collect the seeds. Some tuberous Droseras are lazy germinators, so it took me 10 months to see D. macrantha (rock outcrop form) germinate in vitro. Others are still sterile in the tubes but didnot germinate for the last 12 months. What I could bring in vitro are:

D. auriculata, D. peltata, D. stolonifera stol., D. zigzagia, D. moorei, D. andersoniana, D. salina, D. ramellosa, D. menziesii.

For some pics depending D. dilatato-petiolaris in vitro and bringing them out in CP-compost try the following link to the German forum.

Perhaps that helps

Stefan
