Hi everyone,

This is my first post in ages! I have not had much of a variety in terms of CP's because we moved overseas but I am starting to re-build a collection slowly. The trouble here really is lack of space!

I have a few plants at the moment and I enjoy photographing them. Since I also require a camera for some of my work projects, I decided to buy an entry level DSLR. I quite liked the canon eos range so I bought an eos 1100D aka T3 body. No lense yet.  I have done a bit of research on the topic but thought it would be interesting to get some opinions from you guys. I think I want to got for an 18 - 55 mm IS and upwards lens just to have a standard lens to begin with, but obviously I want something that works for macro work as well. What do you use for your pics?

Hi Nadja.

I am a Nikon user and use a dedicated 105mm f2.8 macro lens for my macro, but seeing as your just starting out it basically depends on what you want to take pictures of in general. The 18-55mm lens is a good small general lens that will suit you for everyday use, and I just had a look on Wex photographic web site and they have some of the 18-55 lenses on offer in there used section, although some have only been taken out of the box and returned so are as New, and the price range is £139-165.

For doing your macro with this lens you could always get a Raynox DCR 250 which will fit onto the end of your lens and you can achieve some good results with these.

http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/dcr/dcr250/indexdcr250eg.htm or failing that you can get some Close up Filters again you can get a set of three different strengths from Wex for about £70.

No I don't have shares in Wex, just had good service.

Hope that helps for now.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the detailed info. I am going to use the camera mainly for macro work but also for videos and everyday photography. I was intending to buy a lens that can fit on my standard lens for the macro shots. Though I will get a real macro lens at a later stage as well. I have looked at some options, but have not investigated much beyond buying a standard lens first so your info is quite helpful! I had a look at the wex site  - I can see why you like them :) - there is plenty of useful detail about different lenses for me to go through. There are so many options, it seems easy to buy the wrong thing if you don't pay close attention to all the codes and abbreviations!
