mobile
I've just picked out my "Mike's Super Fast" seedlings. I sowed a few other seeds at the same time and Mikes's Super Fast definately seems to be ahead of the rest: DSC_0291 by Carl Leach, on Flickr DSC_0305 by Carl Leach, on Flickr DSC_0292 by Carl Leach, on Flickr
Blocky71
How old are these mobile?, they look about the same size as some seeds I've germinated from my own plants. Mine are now 3 years old !. Painfully slow growing
mobile
They were sown in March 2014. I have other location and location crosses sown the same time which are at a similar stage, just a little behind. Sent from my XT1039 using Forum Fiend v1.2.11. Blocky71
So you've achieved the same size plants in 7 months as to what I have in 3 years!. I just recently bought some hybrid ceph seeds, I might send them to you for 6 months !. Nice results though mate, very rapid growth.

Blocky71
Sorry mate, been on my hols and just got back. My seeds germinated in a basic Irish moss peat and perlite mix that I use for most of my plants. The sarra's and vft's have thrived in it but all my Ceph's seem to have gone backwards this year, I'm torn between leaving them be and repotting them all. I'm thinking taller pots as the roots can get pretty long and a more gritty/ sandy mix?. Any suggestions to mixes would be welcomed and as to whether to repot or not after a bad years growth rate or leave them alone and hope for an improvement next year... mobile
My current preferred Cephalotus mix is 2 x peat, 1 x coco chunks, 1 x perlite, which makes an open mix. I prefer open mixes for Cephalotus and I avoid grit/sand at all costs.
snowwy
What is the story behind these "super fast" seedlings? Nice growth by the way.
Blocky71
Well from what I've seen of your ceph's mobile they look very happy in your mix, where do you get these " coco chunks" ? I'm very tempted to unpot some of my sadder looking plants, rinse what substrate I can from the roots and repot. We've had a pretty good summer down here in the South East this year and I was looking forward to watching my ceph's develop, instead they've had a really poor season, dying back and re sprouting but now half the size they were. There's no obvious signs of ill health, the pitchers that do develop look healthy enough but smaller than the existing ones from last season. I'm really stuck on whether to just leave them alone or change the medium.
corky
Had the same happen to mine this year Blocky, they are smaller now than six months ago,I repotted from peat and sand to peat and perlite. My thoughts were something was broke and needed fixing.I am waiting to see improvements as only did it recently
Blocky71
Sad to hear Corky. I'm thinking along the same lines as you were. A tough call to make.... Apologies to mobile for hijacking your thread, I've started a new one.
FredG
I'm pleased you both managed to get hybrid seed, what species was crossed with the Cephalotus ? mobile
Terminology error on my part Fred... it's an age thing I say location crosses in the first instance, but then mistakenly say hybrids in the next.

FredG
Terminology error on my part Fred... it's an age thing I say location crosses in the first instance, but then mistakenly say hybrids in the next. Carl, I think on a specialist site like this we do need to ensure that we use correct terminology otherwise people may finish up using silly kindergarten terms like "leaf-pullings" etc. Stephen is currently in abstentia so someone has to say it
Blocky71
I too may be incorrect in my terminology, the seeds I have are ' Eden Black ' x self "Vigorous clumping" x " German giant " x ' Eden black ' x self " German giant " x ' Eden black ' x self I haven't sowed them yet but should get around to it shortly. From my painful and limited experience in growing from seed I'm still not sure why I'm putting myself through this. Maybe I'll be back here within 16 months with the germination results (Fred), and then five years after that with some pics ! . Thanks for the link Carl, so charcoal is safe ? mobile
Yeah, charcoal is safe as far as I'm aware and in my experience.
