Phil the tyke
I have a few trays of seedlings growing and noticed that they are vanishing. On closer inspection I noticed that there were some very small worm like creatures crawling about on the surface of the compost. They are clear to white in appearance. Could these little pests be eating them and if so can anyone give me advice on exterminating them. Would watering them with chess hunt compound help. They have really enjoyed my darlingtonias. Advice appreciated Phil
SFLguy
Sounds like fungus gnats, Abby systemic insecticide can kill them, I think mosquito dunks in their water tray also works
Little-Bacchus
On closer inspection I noticed that there were some very small worm like creatures crawling about on the surface of the compost. If they look like this then they are indeed fungus gnat larvae. Edited October 14, 2014 by Little-Bacchus
bonehead1996
I have these in my vft seedling trays and they don't seem to be posing an issue, some of the seedlings are now managing to trap them too, should I be treating these if no apparent Harm is coming to the seedlings? If you are seeing no damage from them then I'd not be too worried about having them but I would take measures to remove the adults such as a few Drosera / Pings, the adults make a good size meal for a seedling. They tend to be more of a problem for freshly emerged seedlings and new roots as they are tender enough to be eaten and root damage can be hard to spot. I don't know how much of a problem they may be to over wintering vft.

Capensis in my seedling tray which seems to do a good job of keeping adults down, as these seedlings are newly emerged (5 weeks) I'm skipping their overwintering this year anyhow

Adelae
I recently lost several petiolaric complex seedlings to these little buggers, I found that putting drosera burmanni plants amongst the seedligns work well, they masacar them, as do adelae and indica, but indica get out of control when they seed and you get loads of indica in your pots, burmanni less so. tish
I do have this issue too. Too many fungus gant are killing my vft seedlings and i had already remove 5 pots of dead vft which i think are caused by these guys. Is there any recommended pesticides against these? Fungicide for fungua gnat? Doesn't seems to work for me.
SFLguy
Fungicides will not work on them, they aren't a type of fungus lol, however I hear that putting mosquito dunks into the water trays the pots sit in will kill them
tish
I will look for some immediately... its hard to find mosquito dunk. SFLguy
If not I'm pretty sure an insecticide would work, but I'm not 100% sure
