notostracan
Hi there, this week I made a visit to the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam and brought back my first ping from the small gift shop. It was sitting in a tray of water with several VFTs but no other pings and it had no ID tag or sign. I'm hoping somebody can help me ID it? Any hints or guesses appreciated :). I'm guessing its a Mexican hybrid? I presume it would be much better to get a picture of the flower for ID, but that would have to wait until it blooms, I do have a couple of quick pics of how it looks now: Edited August 23, 2014 by notostracan
SoLongFairWell
Looks like it could be Tempa but then again it might not. It's one of the Mexican ones anyway so grow it that way.
notostracan
Thanks Richard, I'm going to try do some reading on "Tempa", when it flowers I will do comparisons with pics online too. Good to know more certainly its a Mexican.

notostracan
Very nice, thanks for sharing the pic! Do you have yours sitting in a wee bit of water in that glazed pot, or do you just keep it moist? Information on Pinguicula "Tempa" is more scant than I thought it would be, does anyone know anything about the origins of this ping? All I can seem to find is that its a relatively new Mexican hybrid that can be found in garden centres. I think I'm going to have to make extensive use of Google translate to find any info on this haha, Edited August 24, 2014 by notostracan
SoLongFairWell
I have it sitting in a little water which I allow to run dry before topping up. The harder one to water is the Weser which is growing in the little shell bowl next to it as I have to guess the watering as there's no drainage holes. I may transplant the Weser next year and probably stick a Utricularia in that bowl instead. I know nothing of the origin of Tempa though, and can find no reference to it with the ICPS. Mine gets treated exactly the same as Sethos and is in the same soil recipe I've mentioned before. They seem to be doing better in that mix than the Weser but another variable with the Weser is that it's in an undrained container. I bought my Tempa at a local garden centre in the spring and it's gone crazy with flowers. I did repot it straight away from the awful stuff they had it growing in. notostracan
Thank for the details. Yeah, mine looks like its in pure peat of some sort, not the best, but at least its putting out some new growth. Maybe if I repot soon enough I might get some flowers before next year. Off to try do some digging on "Tempa"! :)
notostracan
I ended up re-potting this plant from pure peat to more like 60% aquarium silica sand (large grains) and 40% peat - its done very well for me and is flowering in winter on a north facing windowsill with 9w of supplemental CFL lighting 4 hours a day. I water with de-ionised water lightly just keeping the constantly peat moist. Does this still look like Pinguicula 'Tempa' to everyone? :) Love the flowers, I also love that they are covered in trichomes, as this Tipulid fly found out to it's own dismay: Edited December 21, 2014 by notostracan
