wojtek0018
Hi! :)Few weeks ago i made a big terrarium made out of cellular polycarbonate (4mm) 105x55x70 cm. Now there are just 3 lamps (two Megaman Plant and one ordinary fluorescent lamp) but i'm earning to buy something better.I also bought fogger - Climatic 328A but it broke and i'm waiting for spare parts. It kept inside at very high humidity level, i didnt have to water plants anymore.1. Do i have to make some holes for air circulation (where?) or just slide windows occasionally? I have PC fan connected to a charger, where should i mount it?2. Is there any equipment missing? Do i need to buy some stuff? 3. Any other comments? Regards :) Edited August 17, 2014 by wojtek0018
Adelae
I would suggest mylar or as I have used in the past a mirror, either on the back, or back and sides, it dramatically increases lighting, and mirrors allow you to see the plant from both sides so if any pests to disease get in it can't hide as easy. Also using a gravel substrate with water at the bottom has a dramatic effect on humidity due to evaporation, but some neps don't like wet feet so they may have to be raised slightly. I always have a small 4-5cm hole in 1 top corner of a 3foot tank, this is also where I have the fan so the air is not stagnant, but I also use 2 cpu fans, in opposite corners to make a whirl effect.. matwag
Hello, well done on your terrarium, it looks great :) 1. Do i have to make some holes for air circulation (where?) or just slide windows occasionally? I have PC fan connected to a charger, where should i mount it? I would personally add ventilation to keep the air circulated by making small vents on the lower part of your terrarium below the sliding doors and also on the lid of it too. If you wanted you could make these adjustable by using something similar to the rotary vents they use on cheap plastic propagators. You'd probably need to do this as you're using a fogger, to prevent the mist escaping through the vents during operation. I'd mount the fan towards the top of the terrarium in one corner and angle it slightly downwards towards your plants so there are no stagnant areas ensuring that the fan has adequate space around it to circulate the air properly. One thing I thought I'd better ask though? as your light fittings are mounted inside your terrarium are they waterproof? Hope this will be of help :) Regards Matwag
wojtek0018
Thanks for all your replys :) @matwag I would personally add ventilation to keep the air circulated by making small vents on the lower part of your terrarium below the sliding doors and also on the lid of it too. I was thinking about the same thing. I'll do this when i find any rotary vents. I'd mount the fan towards the top of the terrarium in one corner You mean on the upper wall of terrarium? as your light fittings are mounted inside your terrarium are they waterproof? I've seal it with duct tape and as i said, im earning to buy other lamps. Everything works fine so far. @Adeale I was using "rescue foil" (i dont know how to call it in english, it is used to keep body of accident's victims warm) in my previous terrarium and it worked fine. It will be hard to find such big mirror to cover this one. Also using a gravel substrate with water at the bottom has a dramatic effect on humidity due to evaporation, but some neps don't like wet feet so they may have to be raised slightly. You mean "Leca" ?I was wondering if i need that, because fogger did all the job. I also use 2 cpu fans, in opposite corners to make a whirl effect.. PC fans were inside terrarium or outside? matwag
Hello, personally I'd mount the fan from a bracket fastened to the inside of your lid as opposed to the side, like in the picture below of my terrarium. http://www.cpukforum.com/forum/uploads/gallery_9015_851_586248.jpg I've used 12mm rigid aquarium tubing and an elbow to make the bracket its mounted from. As for the vents you could even make a sliding vent using any polycarbonate you may have left over :) Regards Matwag
wojtek0018
UPDATE Hi! I bought new lamps: -Slyvania Gro-Lux 30W -Slyvania Aquastar 30W My fogger still doesnt work, but i'm looking for a new one online. I also put "rescue foil" on front to reflect all the light back inside to terrarium. Humidity: about 80% Temperature: 18-23° I have very simple question - what kind of species i can grow in there? I'm asking because some of my nepenthes (ampullaria, rafflesiana, hookeriana) got burnt (?) and they are growing really slow.
pmatil
Humidity is OK but temperature I think is too low for lowlanders like ampullaria, rafflesiana and hookeriana.
