Avestra
I just received my order from CZPlants. Nepenthes truncata had some brownish spots on the leaves. Is this a serious problem? Should I do something with the plant (treating it with fungicides or something like that)? Or maybe I can just wait and hope that it will grow some new leaves without brown spots? Is it safe to keep this plant in the terrarium together with my other nepenthes? I am a little paranoid about getting any infections there. Dave Evans
this appears like spider mite or thrips damage.
matwag
Hi Avestra, it may be red spider mite but the best way to tell is by using a magnifying glass to inspect the undersides of the leaves, if you can see tiny little straw coloured mites the size of the sharp end of a pin moving about fairly rapidly then this is probably the problem. Let us know what you find:-) Regards Matwag
Avestra
Thank you for the replies! It seems like I was very unlucky with this purchase. I bought from CZPlants two nepenthes - truncata and veitchii x platychila. After you mentioned those bugs, I carefully inspected also the other plant - after all, if a nursery has some bug infestation, then all plants should get them. And there really was exactly the same problem also on my veitchii x platychila. In the first picture you can see some brownish spots on the lower leaves. In the second picture you see underside of one of the lower leaves. Those red dots are damage on the leaf. So it seems like both plants I purchased from CZPlants have had some bugs in the past. Unfortunately I don't have a magnifying glass at home (I'm a newbie in Nepenthes, but I guess it's about time for me to buy the glass), but with my eyes I could not see any live bugs still being on the leaves. I saw only the spots they have left. So maybe CZPlants have had some bug infestation in the past, but now they have killed all the bugs and spots are all that's left? Or maybe bugs are still there, only too small for me to see? I'm not sure, but I guess I should better spray the plants with something. manders
Try and find a bug spray that has either a miticide or an acaricide as part of the ingredients. Mites can easily kill a plant if left untreated. Higher humidity is supposed to help but what really helps is giving plants a regular strong spray with water (without drenching the compost too much if possible). matwag
Hi Avestra, please remember the theory of it being red spider mite is just an educated guess, so it'd be wise to invest in a magnifying glass first before you reach for the pesticides to be totally sure but be warned the mites are tiny so you'll need to look very closely. Until that time I think you're being wise in not introducing the plant to your terrarium until your totally sure it's safe:-) Regards Matwag
snowwy
Have you contacted the seller about your case? Nobody likes receiving sick plants.

manders
Another dodgy CZ Plants purchase... They used to be ok, but these recent reports have really put me off ordering from them and i was on the lookout for some new plants.... Avestra
Yes, I contacted CZPlants on 9th July. I'm still waiting for a reply... *fingers crossed that they won't ignore me* Brown spots on plant leaves was not my only problem with this order. I ordered 2 nepenthes plants and 1 liter of living sphagnum moss. There was no sphagnum moss in the package - they just forgot to put moss in it. I already made a "temporary home" from plastic baggies for these two plants. I was not expecting to receive infected plants, so I had no spare terrarium prepared for them... Would neem oil work for the mites or thrips? A while ago it worked when I had some spider mites on my parlor palm. Would it be safe to use it on nepenthes? Manders, if you want new plants, I can suggest carnisana.pl or carnivoria.eu - I just received my orders from them, and everything was perfect. And yeah, I won't buy from CZPlants again. pmatil
If you mean live moss from CZ then don't order it. I did and it wasn't what I expected. Seemed like it was just collected from a forest: lots of twigs and stuff and it wasn't mostly even green (live). I mostly order from CZ but yes the quality varies a lot. All my plants have lived though (except those very small Campanulatas which I killed myself).
Avestra
Update. I sent my first e-mail to CZPlants on 9th July. I finally received a reply from CZPlants on 25th July. We agreed that they will send me a miticide and the sphagnum moss. I received the package on 13th August. Conclusion - it took forever, but at the end CZPlants did help me solve the problem, so it's ok. As for the quality of live sphagnum moss, I can only second what was said by pmatil - it was mostly dead. I'll just have to wait longer for it to start growing. Guest Olivermurray7373
I'm really not shure about cz plants. I planed to make a massive order (aristolochides, intermis, Dubia, Hamata, burbidgea, lowii and a lot more great species) from them in the next month) But now I am really not shure? Maybe I will go to the more expensive wistuba. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Edited November 4, 2014 by Olivermurray7373
dimitar
I still struggle myself to make differences between Cz plants and Wistuba either...
Gareth Davies
cz plants buys in from both Borneo exotics and Wistuba. I've been very disappointed with cz plants this year, poor communication (my order was ignored for week), and eventually, I heard that 75% of the plants I ordered weren't even in stock- it then took weeks to get a refund. Wistuba is 100% reliable, but is only shipping for the next couple of weeks, and I've found it's much easier to establish small plants in Spring than it is when we're heading into winter... You only have to look at CZ's website to smell a rat....... 285 different neps in stock ? I don't think so. Prior to the recent BE stock, all other popular European nep sites had less than two dozen in stock.
pmatil
Yes you have to make sure that the plants you want are in stock before ordering for CZ. No definitely sick plants for me from there as of now.
Icarus
my singalana tujuh also had spider mite damage when i received it from czplants. I emailed him several times about that but he seems to not care about this.
