trap mechanism

I just force-fed my D.muscipula ‘coquillage’. What a strange trap construction.

I noticed the dents/stumps to point inwards when closing. Is this cultivar capable of catching its own prey?

I have them outside, so plenty of chance to catch insects. But, after a few months no prey yet, until I fed some Galleria mellonella larvae today.

Is this a functional trap? I also tried some 'microdent' traps. I found them to work remarkably well.

A step forward in evolution of trap mechanism. What is your opinion on this matter?

The spines act as a cage coming together quickly further out from the trap itself. This improves the chances of a capture as the interlocking spines blocks the escape of an insect that might have cleared the trap itself, forcing it back in to the trap. Ive seen this happening.

Short spined varieties do not have this advantage and probably have more failed captures. Possibly why they are not present in the wild as it would be a significant disadvantage compared with the spined varieties
