What you don't normally want to see

I found this big chap/lady in one of my mixing buckets in the greenhouse. As I very recently acquired a  HD camcorder I couldn't resist having the opportunity to do some action stuff :laugh1: .

There is some really fast movement but it's not the slug, it's the little white mites on its rear. I've never inspected a slug and found these little pests(?) not present.

This video is entirely scientific and nothing to do with me playing with the camera and editing software, honest guv!

The Large Red Slug ( they come in black too)

Nice one Fred!

Am I correct in thinking the very big ones are mostly detritivores? I thought it was generally the smaller ones that actually do the damage.

That being said we have some spectacular ones (red/brown with a banded margin and up to 5"-6" long!). Mrs Cephfan doesn't like them much but I really enjoy watching them.

Do snails that become homeless become a bit sluggish?... I'll get me coat ;-)

Cheers,

Steve

For those that like the little white parasites, they're Riccardoella limacum.

I used to feed several hundred Limax maximus Steve. The only damage I ever had was when one disturbed a pot of very small seedling Pinguicula while it was grazing the algae on the peat surface.
