tish
Hi all, I bought some plants from private seller and since have doubts on the cultivar of the plants I buy. I need some help to verify the correct plant. Is the plant correct to the name? I bought Red Piranha from a guy "A" in my country who says he bought from another guy "B". Guy "B" bought Tissue culture. This red piranha when I buy from him looks small and short petiole with thin cilia. Really don't look like a normal Red Piranha. After 1 year, alot of diversion but very little grow and still look much same size. I bought 2 more plants from someone in Netherlands. A Funnel Trap and Red Line. I too have doubts as Funnel dont look at all like a funnel trap. And so I have doubts on Red Line. I am unable to contact him now, Funnel Trap Red Line Edited April 16, 2014 by tish
petesredtraps
How big are the plants? I ask ,because personally I don't like buying a plant that's less than 5 cm, many VFT look rather typical when immature. "Funnel trap" my own plant produces the funnels when it wants sometimes hardly any, it also produces some "Ruffling" on the leaves at times that looks really different. "Red Piranha" isn't rare ,so I couldn't see the point of the seller selling you any other than the correct plant. "Red Line" there has been some conjecture about this one, who sells the real one ,etc, etc, that's a little frustrating ,the same issue is going on with "Dracula" I have two that are deffinitly the real McCoy while one other is dubious, but they have to get to a good size before you can have a real good look at them. Carnicarni
For the "Red Piranha" it is maybe the "Red Piranha MS" from CZ Plants. The plant looks like a "Red Piranha" but stay small. Probably even smaller than a "Bohemian Garnet". I have one and I have to say that it doesn't present a real interest. I've bought it because I thought it was a normal "Red Piranha" For the "Funnel Trap" you should take others pictures and try to see if the plant makes the very caracteristics traps. The last one seems to be young so I'm not sure. But doesn't looks like a "Red Line". Maybe wait a little that plant grows.
Tuberousdrosera
One thing i have found with red piranha from young plants they are rather slow to grow to adult size. And yes funnel trap produces traps when they want I had a good flourish this spring but not on all the plants mind you .
Guest paul y
situations like this just serve to reinforce my belief that the only way to ensure that you are getting the real deal is to buy from professional nurseries who have a physical address you can go to and deal with face to face. its easy to take advantage of the anonymity provided by the internet, how many "rogue traders" would think twice about fake sales if they knew they might get a knock on the door, especially if that person knocking has spent over ten years learning krav maga from an Israeli friend.
tish
Petearetraps im not at home now. Red piranha i think is about 3cm. I have it for 1 year and still this size. Maybe bigger a little. Seller claims it is from USA Flytrapshop. Funnel trap is a leaf pulling. From 10 months ago. Now about 7cm. During this time I have not seen a funnel shape so it makes curious. Now I know they make funnel shape only if they want to. This is weird. Here's a photo below of whole plant. Carnicarni I am new so this is my first time hearing red piranha ms. I didn't know about it. But I dont think FTS sell this to my seller. Maybe it really take a long time to grow up? But it has put out many diversion I have 4 plants now. Red line is also a pulling same time with funnel trap 10months ago. Still small plant. I will wait. Picture of whole plant of funnel trap below. Tuberousdrosera good to hear you have good growth this spring. same reply above. Thanks people. tish
Paul I agrew with you. That's what I did with red piranha and other clones. But I think can be done better if I buy from reputation cultivar sellers stores. However some difficulties I faced is my location. Singapore which is half the world away from best CP shops. Guest paul y
living in Singapore which is hundreds if not thousands of miles from the nearest cp nursery means you can open the only cp nursery in that part of the world thus cornering a specific portion of the global market which in turn will make you money, build a reputation and only serve to help you.
Tuberousdrosera
I have up loaded some pics of my red piranha and funnel trap. It will not let me copy the links on my iPad so use the link below. The red piranha I also got some from the Fts store via tissue culture and they look just like my plants I got a few years ago. The funnel trap I have got of two different people some time ago, the plants even look a it different form one another but have the funnel traps, I see there still several even today. My red line is either a duff or a very boring plant, I will see how it grows later on. http://www.cpukforum.com/forum/index.php?app=gallery&album=

Sound like a good plan Paul. But looks like I have a long way to get there :) Maybe I can start of with cloning the plants when they reach a good size. The Red piranha you said a few years ago. How big are they now do you have a photo? Or are the still the same size? I see your funnel trap don't shows any funnel shape too. I guess when funnel finally shows a funnel shape. it is time to take precious photos of it come to think of it. it still looks nice without the funnel shape
Tuberousdrosera
The red piranha as are now adult they grow upwards and remain quite a slim plant so compared to a lot of other dionaea they look more elegant. The funnel traps do have funnel traps (sorry poor pic my iPad didn't like all the sunshine in the greenhouse) the smaller oblong traps you see if you zoom in a bit on the pics are the funnel traps, they are much smaller than the normal traps

3Star
I bought a funnel trap and was able to divide it straight away. Of the two plants one has produced funnel traps and one has shown no signs of producing them. Dave

tish
I found the email of the seller of funnel Trap and Red line from the paypal transaction. I contacted the seller to ask with pictures and he confirm with me the plants he sold me are really Funnel trap and red line which he bought from Germany. I think this pretty much solve the identity for me and the red piranha . thanks every one for making time and effort to look into this, really appreciate. Alexis
Even when small, Red Piranha doesn't have bristle teeth like that.
tish
Even when small, Red Piranha doesn't have bristle teeth like that. Alexis, that's what I thought in the first place. Or at least they should not look so "bristle" when they are small. Sent from my SM-N9005
jasonkochuni
Your Red Piranha looks like a Bohemian Garnet to me, but I cannot say with 100% certainty. I used to grow Bohemian Garnet from tissue culture, and they looked identical around that size.

I used to grow Bohemian Garnet from tissue culture, and they looked identical around that size. I'm not sure but I doubt so. Because from the first day I got this plant until now. The look is exactly the same except it grew slightly bigger maybe by 1/2 . I see Bohemian Garnet lools quite different. Q.G
Your Funnel traps looks like a random plant from the "dentate traps group" :) Nice plant, but no funnel trap, no crested petioles, so ... Also, such a bright red colouration is quiet rare on the 'Funnel traps' but Singapore's climate can maybe change a lot the aspect of the plant. Best regards,
