Muel
Hi all, I thought I would share some progress pictures with you of my terrarium I'm making. This will be a very drawn out project as I'm in no rush to get it done. Basically I divided a Ceph, had an old terrarium hanging around and then a friend gave me a load of perlite so I decided to do this: I'm waiting on a load of dried sphagnum moss to arrive to create a layer over the awful garish perlite. I'm looking forward to when the moss takes over and starts growing but even dead sphag looks better than garish white perlite everywhere! I'm planning on adding some Utrics and some Drosera at some point in the year. I will be looking at lighting options too as the lighting isn't adequate at the moment either. So if anyone has any tips there (I'll be doing it on the cheap) feel free to chime in, if not I'll be cruising the forum at some point looking at some of the million lighting topics for ideas. So yeah to sum up it looks horrible at the moment but won't when I'm finished!

Muel
Haha I know I will be sorting it over the weekend. I'm just trying not to look at it for the moment...

Muel
Ok so a small update. I've mixed in some dried sphagnum (I ordered the wrong one I've ordered from the past and it sucks, full of roots and rubbish). I've raised the level to form a kind of mountain. Until the live moss takes over properly it's going to be well disgusting to look at for a while haha. On hindsight I'm regretting using perlite as it looks awful, however it was free so waste not! I need to fill the rest of the tank with sphag but I shall wait until I can source a big bag of live moss to top this with. I'm thinking of devising a way to put a load of spanish moss in the corners to bring it in a little as a display. mobile
I had a setup very similar to yours, but I used perlite and live Sphagnum moss - without dried moss. The Cephalotus loved it and it was fantastic for rooting leaf cuttings.

Muel
Ok so I still haven't done anything more on this project as I'm feeling a bit under the weather and I haven't got the most drive at the moment but the Cephs seem to be happy about the situation. Especially to say they were divided this year and have been messed with yet again when I started this. New growth on every plant Does anyone have any suggestions for Drosera that would look good? I was thinking something taller and red but it would have to be a species that doesn't require a dormancy as such so I'm guessing D. filliformis is out of the question. Maybe some red capensis... Also I need to get some Utricularia monanthos in there.
corky
i would try and keep the Australia theme myself, what about d.adalae ,i have never grown them myself,or hamiltonii ,they are small rosettes but do grow alongside cephs in the wild, probs not the answer you want but would be my choice but hey capes are nice but i think you wouldn't want to let em flower they could take over
Muel
Yeah I was thinking of an Aus theme however I think I want something in there with a little height to make for a better display but I'm not totally sure as If I go for something too tall it will take the focus away from the Cephs which I don't want. D. hilaris is one of my favorite sundews. Too many choices is horrible haha

Muel
Just a quick update that the Cephs seem to be happy as I have a flower. I still haven't put anything else in here. I think I will wait until August when I get back from my trip around South-East Asia now.
Muel
Ok so I've just come back from SE Asia. Not much has changed apart from more flowering and algae covering the moss a bit. Any tips on stopping that happening? As it looks a bit gross. I've always used live moss before so not had this issue.
Muel
Ok so I decided to scrap the terrarium. The algae and the fact that I don't have an awesome light unit lying around to put on it plus the fact that I have limited space for the moment all annoyed me so I ended up banging them in the greenhouse. tish
Perhaps some green sundew or small rosette sundew like burmannii or long and thin sundew will contrast with the ceph and not taking much attention
Muel
I put a load of D. spatulata seeds in with the cephs in their new tub tish
