Peabody
If I repot a few plants in fresh compost is the purpose to put the plants in loosely packed compost ? Can the used compost be re used if it is loosened up by sieving it ?
ada
If I repot a few plants in fresh compost is the purpose to put the plants in loosely packed compost It depends on what you repot, loose compost would be no good for a two foot tall sarracenia would it,new compost helps the plant because it contains some nutrients the plants can absorb and use to grow.Loose compost is better,it allows the roots to get more oxygen than if a plant has been in compacted soil for a few years Can the used compost be re used if it is loosened up by sieving it ? Yes.Old compost can be mixed with new,or i use it for sowing seeds onto so you don't get the mould growth attacking the seeds that you do sometimes with new compost. ada
tom499
Agree with Ada, it's great for seedlings.
SoLongFairWell
When repotting to a larger pot do you have to remove the old soil or is it OK, if not dividing the rhizomes, to leave the rootball in the compost and new soil to fill the gaps? petesredtraps
I think this depends on when you're doing the repot. Next March all my Dionaea will be due a repot, each plant will have its' roots given a gentle shake in water, before potting up, I want the roots to enjoy the fresh media.
