Hello everyone,

At the same time of paopagating vfts,I also get some plants of leontopodium leontopodies (Edelweiss) and carry out TC experiment of them. Here are some pics to share with :)

Red callus, inducted under inappropriate hormone circumstances, are took as inefficient to regenerate adventitious buds.

This is the granie-like,green callus,we can also see that there are already some plantlets are growing at the surface of them.

Seems like unpossible for roots to get inducted~

These plantlets are booming in the flask!!

Another background: It is said that edelweiss contains some substances that are benificial for human healthy such as flavonoids. This plant may be worthwhile developing for tea or supplement making.

Hope you enjoy them!

Good evening Mister Vulture,(you speak German, because of your nickname "Geier"?)

Edelweiß in vitro...now, that is a blasphemy! I have no clue about Edelweiß, some years ago someone (a manager of a job training centre) who wanted to grow them in his garden told me there are sometimes Edelweiß offered in garden centres and DIYs coming from mass propagation in Holland. They would be looking poor and would rather have a more grey flower colour than the natural shiny white. He finally found a special nursery which raised them from seed (I believe) where those plants were relatively expensive. But the manager was happy to grow robust plants with shiny white flowers.

Another background: It is said that edelweiss contains some substances that are benificial for human healthy such as flavonoids. This plant may be worthwhile developing for tea or supplement making.

I hope you don´t mean Edelweiß substances are good aphrodisiacs.... :laugh2: Excuse me for being cynical! There is this terrible prejudice Chinese would use everything rare and special as aphrodisiacs.

Friendly

blasphemy, speak German,aphrodisiacs

HI,Andreas Eils,

may be I used incorrect word "supplement" which may refer to aphrodisiacs but I absolutely do not mean that(instead I have learnd a artical,it said some south european would use beetle and wein as aphrodisiacs in 18-19th).I just want to talk about propagation of this plant and hope one day herbal drug practitioners would extract effective components from artificially produced plants instead of from ones collected from the fragile high-land living habitat.

As you talked about the "natural shiny white" edelweiss I'd like to say any plants would grow happier in their natural habitat and sexual produced plants would overwhelm their asexual conterparts in the long run. However, it is for edelweiss devastating if us selfish human are all pursuading this "natural colour" and collecting plants and their seeds from mountians without moderation.I'm very sure your Cps,even the nepenthes showed in your avatar included, are all from TC factorys since they are all proctected by CITES.As for me,in the prospect of protecting,TC is all right.

yep,I have learnd several years of german before I learned english though I haven't master them until so far, that should be the main factor contributed today's embarrasment.I apologise for the misuse of words that let you misunderstand this artical.

And at last,I am really not intend to insult the in your culture "both noble and white" plants,if it is so I beg your pardon, for I and my vocabulary are guilty.

Hello "Geier7",

Carl is right, I wasn´t that serious when I was talking about aphrodisiacs! U. a. Nashornpulver, Schlangen...

Oh, does the readership non-capable of the German language also wants to know what I was writing about?

"It was a spontaneous idea to link the benefits of Edelweiß to aphrodisiacs because in the traditional Chinese medicine a lot of animal and herbal substances are considered to increase the lust. Such as pulverised horn of rhinoceroses, snakes (whatever part of them)... Unfortunately some of these animals are severly threatened and endangered. And the effect of these animal aphrodisiacs has more to do with superstition than with scientific fundament.

That Edelweiß contains substances beneficial to the human health is rather new to me. I find this quite interesting. Nature still has some surprises up its sleeve. Yes, I think, Edelweiß should absolutely be propagated artificially for medical purposes. It is not important in this case if the flowers look as nice as grown in the wild or just greyer and dull.

Picking Edelweiß at habitat is very dangerous. The steep slopes of the Allgäu grass mountains for example can become unexercised climber´s doom! In the past centuries a number of poachers have fatally fallen from the mountains. Despite of that humans have almost managed to extinct Edelweiß in the German Alps. Thanks to strict conservation measures the populations have recovered considerably at Höfats, Schneck and other mountains again.

The Nepenthes neoguineensis in my avatar originates from Wistuba tissue cultures. Certainly! And of course the plant won´t reach its natural splendour under my conditions. I would need to be equipped with the same expensive technics for climate regulation like botanical gardens have to come close to natural vigor. ;o) Yes, maybe we humans must overthink our taken-for-grantedness in doing with nature what we want and to occupy each creature which fascinates us.

In any case I wish you much success with your in vitro cultures with Edelweiß.

Best wishes

Andreas

Oh, by the way: Yeah yeah, our European ancestors surely have used doubtful - from a present-day perspective - aphrodisiacs. *d´oh* I am told an example from Turkey where the locals dug up thousands of bulbs of an orchid genus (Orchis) to make powder out of them because they felt confident this would increase virility. (These bulbs even look like testicles; the Greek word orchis does not mean anything else than "testicle". *laugh*) Nowadays there is an ice-cream delicacy in Turkey having powdered orchis bulbs as an ingredient. You need to eat it with fork and knife because it is of a very solid consistency.

Finally I better don´t think on bruised bugs (surely Scarabäus) and similar... *nausea*"

hallo,Andreas,

looks like you use Google translator or similar. Then I can stick to English. Oh dear, I once had a friend in Singapore and we had a lot of fun with Google translations between German and Chinese!

Yes, with ongoing modernisation of the society and economy superstition is disappearing more and more. But let´s stop the off-topic talk and focus on the Edelweiß again. :o)

I am not sure about any myths of the Edelweiß in Germany or our Southern neighbours Austria and Switzerland. I guess it mainly attracted collectors due to its extraordinary look.

Ah! Wikipedia mentions Edelweiß was considered to have a magic effect as a spell of love and men picking Edelweiß at steep mountains and bringing them to their beloved were respected as courageous. Hehehe...I once visited a favourite painter of mine, Christian Modersohn, in his studio. He grew up in the Allgäu Alps and met his wife there. He related to me how he slipped at Himmelhorn while picking Edelweiß for his girlfriend. He had luck not to fall from the slope! Wuh, you can pay hard for your courage! ;-)

Ah, I´ve read gardeners often cultivate Edelweiß in too nutritious soil and too shady and for that reason the plants "etiolate" and have greyer and duller flowers.

Kind regards

Andreas

Hi,Andreas,

You are eye sharped.I actually do use a translator in responce of you. language in your land is for me with great grammar difficulty, makeing it not easy to formulate a grammatically right paragraph though it's not hard to understand. That's one of these reasons that I turned to English 4 years ago.So that's why I said "have learned" rather than "have been learning". (I shall not go sth about language too far for fears that this topic get deleted by Admin :) )

I picked up these edelweiss and their seeds in TianShan mountain at the altitude of about 3700 m where sunlight is very abundant and UV is very strong.Edelweiss there are relly white for the whole plants are embedded by a thick hair layer.Yes,these plants are Highland natives, naturally needs extrodinary growing environment that is until now impossible for us rebuilding. You can see plants in the culturing jars are deepgreen and with little hair. It's surely not so charmont as it do in their habitat!(after picking plants I get punished,my skin exposed to short wave UV ,is peeled off )

when I referd to myths about edelweiss,OK,it maybe, that I again used incorrect words. Here I mean there're some stories about them in your culture,e.g edelweiss stands for courage and brave.Even Hitler have made pedals at the figure of these plants to award his sodiers.

At the end,I suggest that any one who deserves to learn edelweiss deep should go to their living standort, feeling why this plants are so respected in german-speaking regions. What I'm doing(TC) are staying at the most primitive pharse----at the sight of material and utilisation.

I havn't peredicted that this topic should derive so many disscutions :chiffa:
