Glass replacement

Recommended Posts

I've had a few glass breakages this year and need to replace some panes. Obviously I could just use 3mm greenhouse glass, but was wondering if people have experience of other materials. By googling I've found you can also get 3mm acrylic or clear polycarbonate and 4mm twin wall polycarbonate for greenhouses.

Suggestions anyone?

In my experience the thin acrylic is no good.Unless they have changed its make up,it gets very brittle after the sun and cold get to it.

I have used lexan, tough as old boots, you can bounce bricks off it but it does go "foggy" with the rain.I still have this in parts, its expensive though.

Any replacements now i use glass just because i can get it free occasionally.

If I were you I would beg second hand glass from window bashers It's free and most likely be 4mm thick all my greenhouse glass is second hand and as cost me nothing . 3mm greenhouse glass is rubbish and very poor quality glass and don't keeping heat in .

That sounds a promising idea. Are you thinking of uPVC window replacement firms?

I got mind from anyone who was replacing windows I just asked If they were throwing the old out and could I have them . It costs them money to throw them away . Bare in mind it's not easy to cut old glass and you have the problem of getting rid of the waste .
