NEW VFT BOOK: Dionaea The Venus's Flytrap

Recommended Posts

Dear all

For the past few years, I have been working on a revised edition of my popular first book Miraculum Naturae Venus’s Flytrap.

To complete the job, I enlisted the help of Stewart McPherson, and together, we are publishing a completely revised new title on Dionaea through Redfern Natural History Productions.

The book is called Dionaea The Venus’s Flytrap, by Tim Bailey and Stewart McPherson.

This title offers a wealth of new information, and provides a conclusive treatment of all aspects of the botanical history, ecology, evolutionary history, distribution and cultivation of this miraculous plant. The book is hard cover, fully colour, and a great companion to Miraculum Naturae Venus’s Flytrap.

One of the most exciting parts of this new book is the detailed descriptions and images of over 100 distinct horticultural cultivars from across the world prepared by cultivar experts Mathias Maier, David Marwinski, Matt Miller and Brad Richard. These include formally registered (officially recognised) cultivars, and others that have not yet been registered but are popular and well known among horticulturists in many countries. Many of the featured cultivars have never before been documented or depicted, and are introduced here for the very first time. The cultivars covered in this work is provided below.

Orders are taken through Redfern. Please visit http://www.redfernna...s's_flytrap to place an order.

Stock is limited.

If you place an order now, your copy will ship before Christmas.

Kind regards to you all

Tim

Is it mistake or will you really describe twice the same plant in the book? As far as I know It's Christian Kern who found UK sawtooth 1 and UK sawtooth II and UK I and UKII are just mislabel to me.

regards

Guillaume

Guillaume's question needs an answer ! He focused on a very crucial point. If you pretend to write a book on dionaea's clones, you have to be aware that there are many mislabelled plants in this amazing word of Dionaea's clones ... So a serious work has to be done to avoid publishing errors ... And we all hope that it will be done ... I also hope that the previous edition of this book will be seriously revised because it brought nothing new to the serious Dionaea's grower ...

Adding pictures of Dionaea's clones is not enough to me ... So I hope to have a good surprise ! ;-)

I dont see anything rude here. A simple question has been asked.

If the writer frequents this site then the rudeness is in the lack of response.

On the comment that nothing new is in the book, I suppose it must be difficult to add new things when your subject matter is just one sp.

Edit

On re-reading the posts more carefully the comment ' If you pretend to write a book on dionaea's clones,'

is not nice but the question still stands

I'm sorry if you feel that my comments are rude ... First, it is difficult to write with all the subtilities of English language when it is not your natural language. I think you should understand it and forgive us for that ...

But it is also rude to have no answer to a serious question, isn't it ?

Secondly, I have to confess that I was very disappointed when I read the first version of this book. For several reasons ... First, I was dreaming of a book showing advanced topics on dionaea's growing, its biology ... And it was not the case ... All the informations that you can find in this book can be easyly found on every forum about carnivorous plants ...The historical part of this book, the most interesting in my opinion, had also already been published earlier in Nelson's book ... This is why I said that this book has to be seriously revised ... I'm still waiting for something new ! And finally, I'm fed up with all the business around Dionaea's clones and I also hope that this book is not just only a way to make money ... It needs to brings something new !!! Nice pictures of (maybe mislabelled) dionaea's clones are not enough to me ... Sorry, if you think that it is tough or rude ...

As common with many factual books, they can be targetted at different levels. For instance, someone just getting into growing carnivorous plants might be interested in buying a book with some basic but useful information on their habit and cultivation requirements and some pictures of the common cultivars. Those who have been growing them for a while and already know the cultivation techniques and perhaps having even visited the natural habitat will obviously be interested in a book that goes into further details, including advanced biology for instance.

As for the comment about answering questions, one must consider that some member have different priorities in life and are infrequent vistors to the forum. They might not see replies to their posts for some time. You might want to check out their 'Last Active' date in their profile.

the books have been delayed for dispatch anyway, so we my not even get them in time for christmas, aaarrrgghhhh!!!

I noticed that it wasn't showing available on Amazon yet. When available, it might be better getting from Amazon anyway and save on the £5.99 postage that Redfern charge.

Dear all

First off, no offense is taken at all by any comments made in this thread. My previous book is what it is, and was designed to bring information together in one place, and also to make information of limited publication available to a larger audience. It was also designed to be written in an accessible form, which obviously pleases some and less a few others. I'm happy to take the likes as well as the kicks, and as we would all like, when the kicks come in, to have them made in a constructive manner. Mobile, I particularly appreciate your balance response posted today, which is very reflective, and I thank you for that.

My relative absence from the CPUK Forum is not intended to be rude. I contracted Limes Disease in late August, followed by pneumonia and currently finished off with stomach and gut ulcers. I'm still quite a way off full health. Add that to several kids, horses, very challenging day job, being Chairman and Publication Editor for the CPS, and numerous other things, I can't get on the forum as much as I would like at this time. Plus, also working on this and another book.

The cultivar section is being written by a collection of leading cultivar experts. Stew and I, and the authors of this section, are well aware of some of issues mentioned, and between us all we are making it as accurate as we possibly can. With so many opinions out in the cp community I expect some questions may still surface once the book has been published, and when they do will seek to ensure an appropriate response is provided.

I've written a piece on advanced cultivation techniques re Dionaea and some other genera/species, but this is not included in the book. This will formally be published in Planta Carnivora in due course.

I do not have an answer myself to your question Guillaume, without referring back to the cultivar authors. I will source a response for you.

FYI each registered/unregistered cultivar includes background on how they came into existence, and the horticulturalist involved. They have all been written to format you would expect for registering with the ICPS.

My best wishes to you all

Tim

Dear all

Some of the cultivars in the original list are double listed, and came about by the use of different spellings between lists originally supplied to Stew and I when we started working on the cultivar section. In the book the lists have been tided up and are now only described one time, and have been researched to the best of our collective endeavors.

For the purpose of clarity, here is the complete list of the cultivars documented in the book:

Dionaea “WIP Slim Snapper” (unregistered)

Dionaea “Zickzackkiefer” (unregistered)

If I may say, the book is a beautiful account of the plant, cultivars, conservation and its botanical history, etc. It is far removed from a hardback version of my first book, and includes a substantial amount of revised and additional text, is in full colour and littered with images - as you would expect from Redfern. Stew, and the other authors brought in, have been working around the clock and have done an absolutely outstanding job.

The book represents an extensive investment, and speaking for myself, any royalties I personally make, should we be fortunate to recoup that investment, will go towards the conservation of carnivorous plants.

Best wishes

Tim

I have been told that there has been another delay with the books, and they in fact will not be ready for despatch until mid january. Redferns site is still saying "to be despatched in time for xmas 2012". Does anyone know what the hold up is this time?
