Are tomatoes carnivorous?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else watch the Halloween edition of QI? In it Stephen Fry said that tomatoes (the plant rather than the fruit) are insectivorous.

Anyone else heard of this before or knows of any papers or articles documenting this?

Thank you,

Mark

This concerns the definition of a carnivorous plant again. Just because dead insects can fall to the ground, nutrients are broken down and then at some future time absorbed through the roots of a plant is a pretty weak reason to call it carnivorous. But you can see the point.

QI often makes dubious statements.
