loligo1964
Here is a linkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMqRScmeu9I Yeah, and we were also visited by aliens in "Chariots of the Gods?" if we are to believe the huffing of von Däniken. This aluminum foil hat stuff is rampant on the internet; and these doom and gloom climate models are no more a reflection of reality than the balsa wood planes I built as a kid. Sure, it looked superficially like a B-52 right down to the rivets, but it sure wasn't. After Hurricane Katrina, many of these doomsayers were actually disappointed that their predictions of greater and greater storms that were to follow the flooding of New Orleans, didn't come to pass. Time to build those bomb shelters, boys; the Russkies are comin' and Al Gore has bought up some prime Southern California beachfront property . . . mobile
Maybe the solar flare will warm the winter up... though we won't be able to talk about it on here as it is going to 'wipe internet'... http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/...th-in-2013.html Though the 'end of the world' might come first... if it hasn't already been... ho-hum... http://www.bible.ca/pre-date-setters.htm

loligo1964
These are designed to scare people but I always wander if there any truth to these. What do you guys make of this one? Recall that old game as a child -- beginning a simple rumor at one end of a classroom, only to find it completely transformed by the time it reached that last desk? Imagine if that could be done, one day in the far flung future, on a global level, perhaps with the aid of high-powered computers, if they ever found their way into households. But that's foolishness, since we all know that computers take up whole floors at universities . . .
Alexis
I suspect the truth will be a lot less dramatic lol! Interestingly, the CET line of best fit for our shores shows it has actually started cooling over the last few years: Has the hockey stick graph now peaked? Interesting how nobody in the media has mentioned this. Also interesting that the rate of warming between 1818 and 1830 and 1890 to 1900 is not that much less remarkable than that of 1982 - 2000. Obviously we'll need another 5 years or so to see if the trend continues towards cooling in the UK.

manders
The warming or cooling of the earth may or may not be due to humans, but it is natural enough that the earth should do so.... The earths temp may well go up and down periodically but the unique thing this time is that it may cause devastation to large populations of people. Now, if global warming is man made, doesn't it then become the responsibility of the rich nations, who caused it, to do something about it?
James O'Neill
Agreed. Even if it isn't (which I think is unlikely) we should still try to fix it so it does not cause devastation.... Or maybe a bit of devastation woule be good...going back to the other thread on extinction, overpopulation, etc.

Anomaly simply means deviation from the normal or expected value. My father is an eminent meteorologist and interestingly he believes that global warming IS having a profound effect on the planet. He went on to explain but he lost me in the maths. Edited September 22, 2010 by sneakfish

Guest hairy-harry
Looks like those Russian winters are starting here already! We are forecast a very long, cold, snowy and drawn out winter very similar to that of Russia.
Stefan P
When people say "Russian Winters" I am always a but confused, in Russia, the winters can get down to -50ºc i know there is some disparity, but -5ºc is not -50ºc

Guest hairy-harry
When people say "Russian Winters" I am always a but confused, in Russia, the winters can get down to -50ºc i know there is some disparity, but -5ºc is not -50ºc Depends what part of Russia you are talking about really! its a big place and the temperatures vary considerably, I think Russian Winters are susposedly on their way here it wont happen overnight but over a period of time get gradually worse until they are on par with a harsh Russian winter maybe? Aside from the temperature differences a longer colder winter snowing in November possibly on and off through to March or April is something we are not used to here, if it gets worse every year like it has been forecast to then this could maybe only be the start of it. Lets hope whoever predicted this is wrong, or I may have to up sticks and find a warmer climate I hate the cold. wallsg7
Its not so much a case of global warming as a case of extremes. When it rains-it rains harder, for longer, and floods. When the sun shines it burns your skin in a far shorter time and causes higher cancer rates. When the wind blows its far stronger for longer-i often see trees downed these days after a storm but not when i was a child. When its cold, its far colder for longer. The clouds are much lower in the sky than they used to be.Big changes are taking place all around us but there are some who still cant see it. Bp oil spill causing the atlantic current to stop?Unusualy low solar activity?Hhmmmm,My guess is...we should not only expect these extremes in future but expect them to worsen. If you add the growing population to the mix then its obvious that food shortages will soon be on the horizon.I can only imagine the problems that will bring. MH1
Adversely, the world in general has had the hottest year on record, or at least joint first with a year in the 90's, but that year had the help of the el nina... so it is that sense it is in fact the hottest! wallsg7 is really on the mark... weather is just going to get more OTT in the next years. Although, so many people assume that just because England is in the freezer, climate change still isn't an issue .On a brighter note, on Friday we are going above freezing for where I like a 6C high (practically tropical after the current weather), so hopefully the cold weather will come to an end... after about... two weeks below freezing! Hooray!
