manders
In the last few months we've had everything from global warming, peak oil, land food shortages and now the sea is apparently going to be virtually lifeless by 2050. Sometimes i wonder why i bother getting up in the morning.
mobile
I stopped watching TV news years ago, because bad news makes good news
jimfoxy
Sell the TV and save over £100 per year on the licence. Spent it on your plants, instead. If you feel that you must, listen to 3-5 mins of news on the radio each day; if you find anything of interest then look it up on the internet. You can save trees by avoiding newspapers, too, unless you have time to read such comics.
Alexis
Only depressing if you believe it all, in the same way you would never eat anything because no doubt there's been a Daily Mail cancer story about it!
mobile
If it wasn't for my twin daughters, I could quite easily do without a TV.

Does watching the BBC via iplayer still require a licence? bill
Peabody
Bill, Can I ask you a very straightforward question ? Do you have a telly ? I don't ! ! ! I live just down from my mother and I record only the programmes I am interested in and when I go to see her I watch them. Completey legally. If I took the DVD down to my house and watched the programme again it would be completey within the rules. You can watch iPlayer to your hearts content because the licensing regulations are only for live transmission of television material. Mags
Had a quick read at the t's and c's: http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help...player/termscon Couldn't find anything tho...
StuartF
You only need a TV license if you're watching programs as they're broadcast. If you download and watch them later then its legal without a license. I don't have a license, but I don't watch programs as they're broadcast - I use iplayer a lot and I use an online DVD subscription service for an endless supply of DVDs. EDIT: from the BBC website: to watch TV online as it's being broadcast, you still need a TV Licence Edited March 7, 2010 by StuartF
Alexis
Watching live TV as it's being broadcast requires a licence. Practically though there is no way this can be enforced, short of voluntarily inviting a Capita salesman into your home and confessing. alexa
I gave up watching the news a while ago, though I do check the headlines on the BBC website every day. TV has got depressing, I'm sure that the beeb talked us into a recession. Still couldn't go without my Two and a Half Men fix, so need a TV! Alex. mantrid
Dont have a TV. Gave it up a few years ago when I realised theres nothing on but soaps, so called reality TV, and cooking programmes. Anything interesting I catch on iplayer or the ITV version.
rsivertsen
I thought I could escape the depressing news, silly realty shows, and pitiful sit-coms by tuning into the documentaries of the cable channels of the NatGeo/Science and Discovery channels, but found myself watching something about 25 different ways in which life as we know it here on Earth could abruptly come to a sudden end, including the reversal of the magnetic poles, (apparently already in progress, and long overdue!) in which we would be without the powerful magnetic Van Allen Belt for a few years, whereby powerful solar flares from an 11 to 22 year cyclic solar storms could rip our atmosphere to shreds, destroying our ozone layer which would eliminate our only protection from harmful UV radiation, along with the winter solstice of 2012 (when our Earth would be the closest to the sun), predictions where the entire solar system aligns to a straight line with the sun and Jupiter and Saturn producing extraordinarily strong gravitational forces, (aside from harmful solar radiation) that could produce all sorts of things from the erratic orbits of super meteorites that are already on a collision course with Earth's orbit to other doomsday events, aside from global warming, rising oceanic sea levels flooding all the major cities in costal areas, the Atlantic regions becoming the new "Ring of Fire" ... ! Hmm, I think I'll just have a beer or a glass of wine out on my deck and just savor a mild and sunny day just before Spring, and not worry too much about things to come! - Rich Edited March 8, 2010 by rsivertsen
