osmosis
Delwin - There is nothing to suggest that the parents are hybrids and if either were, it would likely have shown up in the seedlings. So there is no reason to call these anything but truncata.Calling them hybrids is what will cause confusion. But, there is no way to prove beyound doubt that any plant doesn't have a bit of something else in it. So should we call them all possible hybrids - No. Actually, Rob has mentioned a percentage of the seedlings not looking at all like the others He was keeping them back for further study Dave
Phil Green
Actually, Rob has mentioned a percentage of the seedlings not looking at all like the othersHe was keeping them back for further study Dave Yeh, but only a very small percentage. As I've already said, we can't be sure anything is 100% 'pure'. When other species grow in the same area, there is a high likelyhood of them having a few genes from each other - just because their great great great granny 'strayed' doesn't make them hybrids. The few different ones may be expressing those stray genes and may be considered hybrids ?? But these seedlings which have been sold are therefore even more 'pure' by having the stray genes removed. For my money these a truncata's nothing more nothing less. To call them hybrids would be incorrect - unless you are going to call all Neps hybrids. My plant is clearly close enough to a truncata to call it a truncata. Also I would hazard a guess that any batch of seeds could throw up some widely different plants, especially in what appears to be a rapidly evolvable genus. Also, please keep in mind the actually flower structure. Even if some of the seed on the original "hybrid parent" were pollinated by another species' pollen, there is still a very good shot most of the seeds will still be pure species as each flower is pollinated separately. It is entirely possible to collect seed from one female plant and it can be a mixture of true species and hybrids in a single seed batch. I would imagine this is still possible in further generations where you might have a mixture of species seed and second generation back crossed hybrids on the same female. Phil Green
Right, OK, yeah.... Time to repot, perhaps? That is a coincidence. Mine have done exactly the same thing, I noticed it yesterday and was going to post a pic soon. Obviously that time of year, I guess everyones will be at that same stage then. Amazing the size difference of these newest leaves.
christerb
Hehe, and I thought it was big enough in the update from March. Should be a nice pitcher on this new leaf. This specimen is the biggest I have seen yet from this batch of seedling. Regards, Christer Edited July 19, 2010 by christerb

Well, you talk about coffee like fertilizer in many treads and obviously have good result let me ask you - do you use for this nep for this size coffee fertilizer? Tha_Reaper
yeah. thats why the spaghnum is almost black, and there are brown streaks on the plant. the brown streaks are just from dried coffee. I have to say, i use osmocote as a fertilizer for most of my neps, but for the smaller ones i use coffee, because i have the less negative experiences with coffee (none, actually) compared to osmocote... but the effect of coffee is also less spectaculair compared to osmocote. Its a bit of a safe bet from my side.

Amori
Just looking at the latest pitcher, I noticed speckles of short brown fuzz on the underside of the lid. Is anyone else's showing this, and is it normal for truncata (it's been so long since I last grew the lowland green)? It's not as substantial as macfarlanei's, but it's noticeable. Cheers
