Guest ieat100s
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just got a TON of plants and I need to know how to make a bog garden. My idea was to dig a hole, put trash-bags as the lining, put in the soil, and put in the plants. Please anyone tell me if my idea should be.......adjusted. Thanks
Rachel
Hi, I am not an expert but I think you will need to invest in pond liner rather than bin bags. Otherwise you are most likely to spring leaks.
petesredtraps
You say a "ton" of plants, being more specific would help. What sort of size are you thinking of? Whatever, firstly it has to be leak proof, for instance old bathtubs are popular, but if you need something bigger than that be prepared to do some work. There are plenty of old posts on this forum about how to construct Bogs, also there is plenty of info on the internet. DaveC
Yeah, dont use trash bags, they're too thin and will tear/pierce far too easily - I'd definately use pond liner but the rest of your idea is pretty much fine though. As said, there are lots of old posts on this subject but basically you can get away with digging a hole, line it with a layer of sand (the weight of peat on the pond liner will otherwise force even the smallest of stones through it) line the hole/sand with pond liner and fill it with your peat/perlite mix. I'd also suggest putting in an overflow hole otherwise you could find your plants totally submerged for long periods if you get some wet weather. Anyway, what ever you choose, best of luck and make sure you post some pics! Dave.
