Propagation tips... How do you multiply your Pinguicula's?

While I have had good success propagating my Drosera using PinguiculaMan (Joseph C's) methods of root and leaf cuttings I have not yet tried to propagate Pinguicula's and was wondering how, other than by seed, people from the forum get these to reproduce clones.

Cheers,

Sean

Most Pings I have heard about seem to propagate readily by leaf cuttings. Aparently some will form buds on leaves whether or not they are on soil! If I were you I would just take some leaves and lay them out on soil. Good luck!

For mexican Pings leaf-cuttings are the fastest and easiest method, they also ensure that the offspring are clones. Often mature plants will divide into two or more rosettes, particularly after flowering, and this is an easy way to increase your plants. Seed is the only other method and not all species in cultivation will sucessfully self-fertilize, so it helps to have more than one clone.

For cold-temperate Pings, gemmae produced around the hiburnaculae (winter resting bud) are the best way to propagate. Seed is the other alternative, slower, though for some species e.g. P. alpina the only method.

Some S.E. USA Pings, particularly P. primuliflora produce plantlets on the ends of their leaves, which are an easy means of propagation. Most other species do this rarely, if at all, and seed is the only reliable means of propagation. Seed is the only method for other warm-temperate species such as P. lusitanicum and P. crystallina.

Root-cuttings do not work for Pings.
