flycatchers
Well my 17 water butts are bone dry, as are all my sundry containers! The distilation unit is running 24/7 but that just gives about 12 litres and there is only so many times you can defrost the freezer! Ordered reluctantly an RO unit but thats out of stock as I might have expected! So tap water alas it is Need rain and/or RO unit please!! bill
blueflytrap
Come and live in the NW (especially 'Sunny' Southport) - Plenty of rainwater here!!!!
mobile
The flash showers we had last week here would have filled all your water butts. I wouldn't want your electricity bill after running a distiller 24/7!
Phil Green
Sorry to hear this Bill. Your Neps will be fine and I'm sure the sarra's won't mind too much for a short time. Luckily I'm still OK - although it has been rather dry, that rain just never seems to get as far as us. I realised last year that it's not just about how much water your store, but how much you collect. So this year as well as adding an extra 300Lt of storage, I also increased the area I collect water from. If you don't already have them, I'd look at trying to fit some form of guttering to your GH's to make the most of what little rain does fall. Hope the RO arrives soon Bill. LJ
I'm sure the plants wont mind tap water for short time, though might be worth flushing the pots through when you have some better water again. Hope the RO unit arrives soon and you get plenty of rain heading your way too. Heather
Mags
I think Wednesday is gonna be a washout for most of the UK so fingers crossed!
andyoliver
What was Hurricane Bill (now TS Bill) will be hitting the UK over wednesday/thursday and although mainly in the north (sorry!) most of the UK should get some effect of the low pressure system. If not I know a good dance you can try! Edited August 24, 2009 by andyoliver

jimfoxy
Fingers crossed, Bill. Is it right that your neck of the woods has the lowest rainfall in the UK?

garyhove
I totally understand down here in sussex no rain has arrived on any days they have said so far lately!!! even tomorrow it was supposed to rain but it seems it going to be sunny for the rest of the week I am very lucky that I have supply of water off my parents when needed but also have a local tropical fish shop who I can buy RO water of quite cheapily as a back up! But I do hope it rains again soon!!
jimscott
Would it be feasible / safe to collect water discharges from an AC unit or from streams?
Loakesy
I think that most of Kent has quite a chalky soil, so the stream water wouldn't be very safe for CPs, Jim!
flycatchers
Still no sign- just a tiny amount of drizzle yesterday! Most be a micro climate here as last week Dover just along the coast had quite a drenching, but all that arrived here never even wetted the guttering!! So Mike when could you get that pipeline down here?? When and if my RO unit finally arrives I fully expect flood conditions from the weather! Just off to get the hose out!! bill

Mags
Before getting my water butt set up i had a shortage and it got so bad that i was forced to collect water from my nearest stream I got away with it and the plants were fine, but for a week or so i felt ill- imagine wiping out your whole collection of CP's... blueflytrap
Mags, Depends what the water has flowed over (or through). If the water is stained brown then chances are its gone over peat and will 'probably' be ok to use over time. If its clear then you need to check what your local rocks are (limestone will be the worse) and if you have used this type of water then you will need to flush through with rainwater. To be doubly sure then take a sample of water to your local aquarium shop and see if they'll test it for you. Surely over in NI you've enough rainwater to float a battleship? Every time I turn on the weather on TV it seems to be bucketing it down in your locale.......

Every time I turn on the weather on TV it seems to be bucketing it down in your locale....... Tell me about it! This was about 6 months ago over winter and it hadn't rained in ages and ages (random for no rain in winter!) It had been a couple of wks since the plants were watered and the pots were ridiculosly light. It was a gamble but thankfully i wont have to do it again
