Rachel
Hi I came across bags of sphagnum moss peat for sale in my local Aldi store today. They are for use in hanging baskets. Can anyone tell me if I can use this sphagnum for my sarracenia or darlingtonia??? I am currently growing my plants in peat and perlite, with orchid bark as a mulch on top because I could not source sphagnum. http://www.aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/58_8993.htm Thanks
Amar
Sarras are not too fussy in what substrate they grow in. Your medium would do just fine. But sphagnum would be just as good, especially for Darlingtonia, they like cool roots, and I believe evaporation in live sphagnum may be better than in peat. Rachel
Thanks, Amar. Do you think this is live sphagnum? How would I know?
Amar
mhh, i assume it's living, they do call it 'moss', and it's green too, see if it looks moist, it's prob. living then.
Ian Salter
If you can't be certain as to it being Sphagnum don't use it as there is a ground moss (commonly seen on forest floors or rotting felled trees or rocks) and this can also be sold for hanging baskets mis-labeled as Sphagnum moss.
