Bringing home plants

Recommended Posts

I will be travelling around Europe this summer and thought I would time it so that I can visit the EEE 2009 just before I come home. I hope to be purchasing some plants there and bringing them home by plane, flying from Amsterdam (only ariport with flight to Cardiff). Anyone had any experience of bringing CPs back form Europe by plane?

Questions

Can customs be awkward and confiscate them, has anyone had plants confiscated etc?

Did you bring them back in pots, if so how? Hand luggage or hold?

Thanks

As far as I know, the whole of Europe is 1 CITES-area. That means that a plant that is legal in Belgium can be taken to the UK without trouble. For species on the endangerd list you should have papers to proof the plant is nursery grown, but your run of the mill CP shouldn't be a problem. Best result on a plane is barerooted wrapped in tissuepaper (moist) and in plastic in your handluggage. (at least for Sars and neps).

See you in Gent

Having some papers that identify the plants wouldn't do you any harm just in case you come across a security guard whose having a bad day

I think I remember reading somewhere that there is a limit to the number of plants that you can bring on a plane but it might have applied to the US and not the EU.

Safest bet is to contact the airline that you are flying with and see what they have to say...
