carnivoor
How many of the seedlings survive in the wild?(any cp). I assume with the growers the rate must be close to 100%, before we start tossing them out as not interesting, but I have no idea what the survival rate in the wild is. Anyone here know? Alexis
I suspect it could be fairly low. Sarracenia for example could have 500 seeds in a pod, and there could be hundreds of pods in a large stand. So you could be looking at 150,000 seedlings a year, which of course doesn't happen. carnivoor
I expect the greatest danger would come from rainshowers followed by sun; the small seedlings would be thrown up by big raindrops and the sun would dry out the roots that are now on top of the soil. Ian Salter
I would have thought seedlings are in far more danger of being nibbled or overgrown and choked out by other vegetation. I think we have all at some point had the tops munched off our precious seedlings or seen how retarded seedlings have become when they are left too long. I was thinking about the really small seedlings, they don't have a good rootsystem yet. It's only when there is enough to munch on that something might eat it. Thinking about all the things that can go wrong ,it's surprizing cp's still exist. after all there also flash floods, fires and pests.
