Can N. ampullaria grow as basal pitchers only?

I've seen several pictures on the internet of N. ampullaria growing as a carpet of basal pitchers. Can ampullaria grow as just basal pitchers, e.g. no vine, or is it a case of the pictures I've seen do not have the vine in view?

Upper pitchers are extremly rare and have been observed only a few times. It is discussed that N. ampullaria produces them only under stress or that they aren't that extraordinary at all but could be high in the trees where they simply cannot be seen.

I have read that this is possible. The added bonus is a lesser susceptibility to low humidity levels.

Incidentally very low humidity induces significant stress and gives uppers if you happen to leave the old vine on - like I did - and btw they are quite puny, simply not worth it. The basal rosette did not stress nearly as much as the upper vine and is still growing nicely the upper portion is not...
