johnnyfrye
I got this at a garage sale a while back, and it's been growing in the gap between two of my terrariums since then and seems to like it. It feels sort of like a succulent, and likes water every week or so. Also, if you break off a leaf, this very bad-smelling white stuff oozes out. I'm just curious to learn what this is; it's a pretty cool plant. Thanks, -Johnny Edited February 6, 2009 by johnnyfrye
jimothy
The white sap suggests a euphorbia species, the closest I can think of is E. caput-medusae, which is a pretty close match, but it may not be this one, as the euphorbia genus is simply mind-bogglingly huge! http://www.collectorscorner.com.au/Cacti/L...es/JCPFS146.JPG
tonyc
As I recall from growing succulents (many) years ago there are about half-a-dozen Euphorbia species in the "Medusa's Head" group and you can only ID them accurately when they flower. johnnyfrye
Somebody else told it was an Orbea Ssp., and I looked those up too. It seems like everything is a close match, I'll have to wait until it flowers!
gardenofeden
no, it's not an Orbea, it's not a Stapeliad, they have clear sap for starters and a different growth form. Looks like a Euphorbia to me too.

tonyc
As Gardenofeden wrote, definitely not a an Orbea or any other stapeliad. It looks likes Euphorbia flanaganii to me but that's no more than an (semi)educated guess ;-)
linton
Looks like an Orbea that I once had except for the rosetted growth habit. You'll know for sure when it flowers, as the flowers stink like rotten eggs.

johnnyfrye
Tonyc, I think you're right. I Google-imaged it and this is what I came up with. It looks pretty much like what I have.
Drosera36
Just be careful with the sap; that stuff can kill if you're not careful. In your eyes, it can blind you. I've never noticed any irritation on my skin from it, but some people say it causes an allergic reaction, considering this stuff is a type of latex. -Ben Edited February 26, 2009 by Drosera36
