lorisarvendu
I had two little bogs in the garden, mainly with purpurea, though there were a couple of taller sarracenias. They both came through the winter ok, but recently one of them has been having problems, leaves going brown etc. I decided to get rid of one bog and transplant the surviving trumpets into the other bog. While digging into the soil, a strange smell wafted up and I realised what had killed off my purpurea. Cat urine. B****rds"! On a separate note, does anyone use river water for bogs? We have a lot of streams in the area (and the Trent just down the road), and it would certainly be cheaper and easier than scrounging rainwater from the neighbour's butt (fnarr fnarr) and spending a fortune on distilled. tom499
I'd look into getting your own water butt, they're not too expensive, and from then on its free, fairly clean water (when it does rain hehe). Problem with stream water is you could have all sorts in it, dead animals, animal waste, illegal dumping of dangerous chemicals, you just don't know. mobile
I personally wouldn't use river water as you don't know what's in it, e.g. run-off herbicides, pesticides, etc from farm fields. Also, if you live in a lime rich area then that will also be dissolved in the river water. Are you not able to fit a diverter to your gutter downpipe in order to collect rainwater? diva
cats usually prefer dry 'toilets' like kiddies sand pits! so i'm surprised they've used a bog.

CarnivorousBlake
Cats? Kill them they are a bloody pest in gardens. Far to money of them arround! Kill a lot of native wildlife to... In relation to bog gardens I usually find myself saying damn deer. They have developed a taste for my S. purpurea and S. flava. I don't want to tell you what they did to D. muscipula. Its always easy to tell when they have been browsing around with the deep hoof imprints in the peat. The neighbors have two cats as well. I will be keeping my eye on them. Blake Edited October 26, 2008 by CarnivorousBlake
