meizwang
One Friday afternoon, I decided to take the 7 hour drive to northern california to visit the Darlingtonia and pinguicula in the wild. On my short 1 full day to see the plants, I found that Darlingtonia was everywhere, but they were hard to find at first. I think I went in September-the days were around 62 degrees F. during the warmest time of the day. At 6am in the morning, it was 34 degrees F. Needless to say, it was chilly. Some populations were hidden up steep cliffs and obscure dirt roads. Others were just dangling right off the side of the road. The more I searched, the more seeps I found. Below is a glimpse of what I saw: The traps are huge. My hand is there to show scale Awesome red coloration during the fall. Kinda mean look, though... insect's eye view. Note the seed pods in the background A different seep with greener colored pitchers. Plants were in full sun A little seep spilled onto the road, creating some nice habitat Some more habitat pics. red Pinguicula macroceras nortensis. The red plants were growing in pure serpentine. The pH was pretty basic-almost 8. Perhaps the intense pH has something to do with the color. some more pings in habitat. This was the common green variety. Habitat picture. This was a seep on a mountainside feeding into a creek
