uglypho
I'm going to cross 2 VFTs I have. The thing that troubles me is that if one plant flowers earlier than the other, than is there a way to preserve the pollen so I can use it on the other plant when it's flower open? Also is the flower able to take pollen as soon as the trap opens or do I have to wait till it's ready? If so, how can I tell if it's ready? Thx. Frederick
Hi pho, vft's will normaly send up more than 3 flowers that'll flower one after the other so i shouldn't worry about preserving polen too long or not having a match. If it does turn out to be bad timing, tap some pollen in a small piece of Alu foil and keep it in the fridge (not the freezer). There is a foolproof way of telling when the flower is pollen-receptive. click here if you haven't got experience with flower anatomy. Watch the stigma after the flower has opened, it looks like a pale blunt little mushroom. It's not pollen receptive in this state. After one to three days (depends on temperature and humidity) the stigma will develop numerous small short threads that makes it look like a small brush. Now it's pollen receptive and it normally stays receptive for a few days (don't exactly know for how long). If you pollinate it once a day for two days in a row, you'll have a very good yield. Frederick
Post edit: I mixed up stamen and stigma, my mistake and corrected.
