Sean Spence
They grow very easily from seed. Just wish I could manage to fertilize the flowers of my plants. None of my forms ever produce seed for me.
matty54
Hi All, Just reading through this thread after finding my ascendens in a very poor state in my unheated (as if we need any heating at the moment!) greenhouse. Do other growers think that it would do better in my terrarium? The leaves have just started going really brown, I'm not sure why, maybe overwatering? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks, Matt
zoomanuk
if the "experts" cannot agree what hope for the rest of us? lol

Thanks, Matt Matty, I wonder if these suffer from sudden death syndrome for no real reason. I had two of them from Sarracenia Nurseries. Both have been kept in a propogator, though in the growing season the heat is off and so is the lid. One of them started to brown as you describe and eventually died off. The other which was in the same tray right next to it, is still looking healthy and growing well.
Guest Aidan
Since this thread was originally posted, the plant in the photographs has apparently died at least twice. It is currently returning from one of these periodic die-backs and growing a new rosette.
matty54
Aidan, Sheila, Thanks for the advice, I think I'll just hang on and see if it recovers, and if it doesn't I'll just put it down to one of those things. Cheers, Matt
RL7836
FWIW - I found D. ascendens to be as prolific/receptive to water propagation as D. binata. I was overrun by the little guys .... My original 'mother' plant grew well, looked extremely healthy, flowered - then shrunk & died. I kept the pot around for 6-7 months to see if it would resprout - nope. All the more reason to propagate - have some backup.
Guest Sheila
As I have only one left now I may give that a try, I have lots of filiformis growing that way at the moment so I may as well throw a leaf or two of ascendens into the tub as well. thanks for the idea Ron. :)
sundewmatt
I'm growing a number of different forms of ascendens (8+?) as well as type villosa. I find some of them are more tolerant of high temps than others - A couple forms take a real dive when it gets hot (eg. Salesopolis), but have come back for me once conditions cooled off again. I love ascendens. At some point, I'll try to post some pics and maybe offer some more spare plants for sale or swap.
