obregon562
Hi all. I very badly want to grow a roridula, and was just wondering which species would be easier to grow (gorgonias or dentata). Any cultivation tips would also be appriciated, as would plants/seeds for trade! If you need my temps, etc..., here they are: I have a greenhouse, unheated, in CA, USA. My temps never drop below 38, but usually the winters are around 40 at night, 50ish in the day. My greenhouse stays about 10 degrees warmer than the outside. The summer temps are about 70 low, 90 high. Umm, are these temps ok for roridula? i sure hope so! As for humidity, i try to maintain about 30-50% in my main greenhouse, but it climbs to around 80% at night. Are these humidities ok? I am prepared to give them full sun in this greenhouse, if they need it... Any other culture tips would be greatly appriciated! Thanks, Frankie
Marcel van den Broek
Hi Frankie, Had to do some calculating to degrees centigrade, but those temps are well within the normal range of Roridula. The higher humidity at night should not be a problem either because Roridula lives close enough to the coast that they are used to fog from the sea. Just keep the soil dry. I water my plants every other day with a litlle water on a tray (i grow both species) and keep them in a sandy peat mix (2 sharp sand : 1 peat). As to the easier species.... well i think gorgonias is easier to germinate but more difficult to keep alive and dentata is tricky to get past the seedlingstage but then it will keep nicely. However, i'am afraid you will have to grow them from seed. Plants are rarely sold and seed is also rare. Silverhill seeds of South Africa and the ICPS sometimes have it but you'll have to wait for it and keep alert. Marcel

Guest Sheila
gorgonias seed is the easiest to come by. dentata is as rare as rocking horse poo. If you manage to find some dentata seed please let us know where from, there are many of us who would love to be able to get hold of a few. Greg Allan
No, he doesn't have a website. He does, however, have an impressive (paper) catalogue.
