sundewmatt
you just reminded me its time to plant the seed of the winter growers... If only I could find the time. Hmmm, maybe I should stop posting messages and get down and dirty with the milled sphagnum,,,,, Sorry but I can't offer you good advice on cistiflora as I haven't got much experience with it. Oh, except for this... they may not grow well for you under lights...
Tim
Where do you get milled spagnum from? I can't find any out here. Is there contact info on one of your bags you could post? Thanks
spiderman
could anybody tell me if D.cistiflora are monocarpic,im sure ive read this somewhere, and also is it possible to take stem and leaf cuttings if the are,so as to keep the plants in your collection.dave
Rob-Rah
D. cisitiflora is perennial but dies down in the hot dryish summer to the wiry roots.

Rob-Rah
I don't know of that, unless people keep it too wet after flowering (i.e. when it wants to go dormant). Drosophyllum needs careful watering after flowering too.... (Or it might have been a bad source - eg. the Leucoufle book says that D. madagascariensis is annual - presumably becuase it died back in winter and he didnt have the patience to see if it re-shooted in spring!) If you're offering plants, I'd be delighted!
Joseph Clemens
Milled Sphagnum is sold by the Mosser Lee Company as NoDampOff. Mosser Lee
Vertigo
A New Zealand company distributes the stuff in cards just like LFS under the name Super Sphag. I believe they usually sell 150 gram cards for about $5USD.
Mike King
Since on the subject, I have D. cistiflora springing up from root cuttings, how should I keep it going without lights etc ?
manders
My 1 year old cistiflora seedlings are just starting to re-emerge after dying off in the summer. At least some of them are, I think most of them have died. Not sure how to get them through this winter. Last winter I had them under lights. Has anybody succesfully grown these from seed to adult in the UK? We must have the darkest, most sunless climate on the planet in winter so I'm really tempted to go with lights again this year. Pyro
FWIW I am growing 2 forms of this, red flower and purple flower. The red flower I got last year and made numerous leaf cuttings from with ease. The purple flower I just germinated a few months ago but they are growing great. Contrary to what Matt indicated I am having no problems at all growing these plants under a 400W HID/MH bulb set 1m above my growtable on a 12hr cycle. I would guess that when Matt refers to lights he is probably thinking fluorescent tubes though (Would that be correct Matt?) The rumor that this species dies after flowering came from D'Amato in his book but I have spoken with him about this and since learned that he had not kept his plants dry enough during there dormancy that year and that is the reason he lost them. Some time back there was a discussion on the CP listserv about this speies, you might want to check the archives and read the threads there. sundewmatt
Hi Pyro, Thanks for the offer / phone conversation yesterday! I was growing them under fluorescent lights, you're correct. In all honesty, I'm not good with plants which require 1/2 a year of dormancy. I just don't have the patience for them. While they're dead above the surface I keep thinking what a waste of space it is so I'm usually not patient enough for them to come up again. :) I think that the temperatures are also important with cistiflora though and don't know if my living room temps would be cold enough for them.
